PHA Educational Luncheon
Learn how to identify what questions to include in the assessment process to detect substance use in the postpartum population, as well as how to create a treatment plan for women in the perinatal period, including which medications may be appropriate and helpful. Additional time will be spent discussing how to identify integrative mental health strategies to achieve better outcomes for maternal mental health.
Emerging Considerations in Maternal Mental Health Forum
Forum Day 1• Maternal Mental Health and the Life Course Model• February 12, 2015
Life Course Theory concepts to be explored include:
• Today’s experiences and exposures influence tomorrow’s health. (Timeline)
• Health trajectories are particularly affected during critical or sensitive periods. (Timing)
• The broader community environment–biologic, physical, and social –strongly affects the capacity to be healthy. (Environment)
• While genetic make-up offers both protective and risk factors for disease conditions, inequality in health reflects more than genetics and personal choice. (Equity)
Forum Day 2• Trauma Informed Care Training• February 13, 2015
Becoming “trauma-informed” means recognizing that people often have many different types of trauma in their lives, particularly those from underserved communities who experienced traumatic conditions at an early age. People who have been traumatized need support and understanding from those around them. Often, trauma survivors can be re-traumatized by well-meaning health care providers and caregivers. Trauma Informed Care emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety for both consumers and providers, and helps survivors rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.
