Driftmier Gets Summer Makeover
The student lounge, lobby and hallways on the first floor of the Driftmier Engineering Center are undergoing much needed updates and refurbishing this summer. When students return for fall semester, they will see significant progress being made to a new and improved entry to Driftmier, walls lined with photos and video displays rather than dated bulletin boards and posters, and a newly refurbished student lounge, courtesy of some of their fellow students.
In May, college officials met with a focus group of students to determine the needs, wants and desires for an upgraded student lounge. Following this gathering, students volunteered to clean out the site, paint the walls, relocate the lockers and provide input on furnishing selections (lockers are being relocated to the 500 hallway by the vending machines). Pending the delivery of new furnishings, the lounge should be complete prior to the start of the 2015 fall semester. Any student interested in volunteering for the student lounge project may contact Mickey Montevideo (mickeym@uga.edu or text 706-540-6454).
Work is just now underway on the entry way and hallways of Driftmier and is being conducted by UGA's Facilities Management Division and outside vendors.

Dr. Ben Davis, Stephen Higgins Help NASA Fine-Tune New Space Launch System
Dr. Ben Davis, assistant professor in the College of Engineering and a former NASA researcher, along with Stephen Higgins, a graduate research assistant, are helping NASA determine if a key rocket component can withstand the rigors of the next generation of space flight.
The parts in question—bellows expansion joints—serve several functions in rocket propulsion systems, perhaps most critically as connectors between fuel and oxidizer lines and the rocket’s engines. While bellows joints have been used on rockets for decades, NASA wants to make sure a flow-induced vibration phenomenon in the joints doesn’t pose a risk for its new Space Launch System.
The SLS will be the world’s most powerful rocket and will launch astronauts into a new era of deep space exploration, including missions to an asteroid and eventually to Mars, according to the space agency. Four RS-25 engines, previously known as Space Shuttle Main Engines, will muscle the SLS into space on each of its missions.
Davis, who specializes in research related to structural vibration and flow-induced vibration, and Higgins are using a grant from NASA to assess the structural integrity of bellows joints that are part of SLS design.

Engineering's Stephan Durham Provides Expertise for the Braves
Way to go, Narendran!
Narendran Sekar, a doctoral candidate in biological and agricultural engineering, recently attended the Bioenergy Systems Research Institute annual retreat at UGA on May 5 and received second prize in the poster competition in the "Graduate Students and Postdoc" category. He received $200 in recognition of his efforts.
Sekar is under the guidance of Dr. Ramaraja P. Ramasamy. His research focus is engineering photosynthetic microorganisms, such as cyanobacteria for efficient photo-bioelectrochemical energy conversion.

Applications for UGA ARCS financial awards now being accepted
$7,500 annual award for doctoral candidates until completion of degree
$10,000 Global Impact Award for doctoral candidates for 1 year
The Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation, Inc. is a national volunteer women’s organization dedicated to helping the best and brightest U.S. graduate and undergraduate students by providing scholarships in the natural sciences, medicine, and engineering.
UGA and the BHSI have been invited to select six new doctoral students for funding in 2015. These awards, five in the amount of $7,500 per student and one in the amount of $10,000 are given to outstanding graduate students during the 2015-16 academic year; the awards are given directly to the students and are independent of any other funding, including university sponsored assistantships. Recipients of the ARCS Foundation Award, who maintain their academic standing, are funded for three years or through the completion of their doctoral degrees (whichever comes first). Please note that mentors must nominate students and submit applications to the BHSI.
**Most importantly, for FY 2016, one of these six new UGA ARCS Awards will be awarded an ARCS Global Impact Award. This special scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded for one year to a UGA doctoral student whose research does or will have an international effect. For more detailed information about the ARCS Global Impact Award, visit www.biomed.uga.edu.
We encourage you to nominate graduate students who meet the following eligibility criteria by 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.
