The Montessori Magic
September 2019
Quote of the month: Be proactive!
The first 30 days of school in Montessori
As the school year began, many families wonder what is happening in the classroom. Teachers and students are working on 2 main lessons in the classroom. The first big work is teaching classroom procedures. Procedures, procedures and more procedures. The second big work in the first 30 days is building community within the classroom. Building both of these at the beginning of the year creates an environment where everyone wins!
September habit: Be proactive
What does proactive mean? Being proactive means we are responsible for our own actions, moods and attitudes. I do no blame others for my mistakes. I do the right thing when no one is looking. I am in charge of me! One of our favorite lessons in September was reading the story called, "Soda Pop Head" by Julia Cook. I have included the story link on YouTube below.

What did you do at school today?
This is a common question families ask their students each day after school. Many students can feel overwhelmed by this question and answer with either "nothing" or "I don't know". It is important to allow students to unwind before asking this question. Wait at least an hour to ask this question. This will allow your students time to process their day. Below are some specific questions that might help you understand their day.
* What math or language lesson did you receive today?
* Tell me about a book your read in class today
* Who did you eat lunch with?
* What games did you play at recess?
* Which enrichment class did you visit today?
* What was your favorite work today?
