Madison Memo
January 2022
A Message From the Principal
In just a few short weeks we will be at the end of our 2nd quarter of school. As we reach this halfway point in the year, this time is a great opportunity to talk to your child(ren) about their goals for the year both academically and doing things "The Madison Way". Each day on the announcements I share our celebrations about how we are progressing in each of these areas. Questions you might ask your child(ren) may be:
- What is one accomplishment you are really proud of?
- What is one example of how you have been kind to others?
- How have you been respectful, responsible, and safe at school?
- What is one goal you have for the rest of the year?
These conversations at home reinforce the work we do daily at Madison.
We have also been fortunate to not have too much winter weather yet but we know it is coming! Please make sure your child has hat, jackets, snowpants, and boots with them daily. It is also a good idea for all students to have a change of clothes they can leave at school in case of bathroom or recess mishaps.
Thank you for your continued support in your child's education, this is a team effort!
Stay warm and keep reading,
Mrs. Opahle

The Counselor's Corner - Happy New Year - A Great Time to Think About Setting Family Goals
Setting goals can happen year round but what better time to start a new tradition with your family than the new year. Goals don’t have to be complicated, in fact making simple goals makes it more likely that you’ll achieve them together.
When thinking about setting a family goal, keep in mind it should be something that would benefit everyone in the family. By setting and working on these goals with your child/ren, you are setting a real life example for them to build on in the future. The ability to stop, reflect and adjust plans is an important life skill.
Here are some examples of goals you could set as a family. Start with something that is manageable and feels possible and have fun together. Make a commitment this new year to make 2022 a wonderful year.

SPOTLIGHT ON ATTENDANCE
The Morning Rush: Getting To School On Time
The morning routine can be chaotic. Waking your child up in the morning, helping them get ready, and getting them to school on time takes a lot of effort. Please know that your efforts in making it to school on time DO matter. In fact, they matter A LOT. Your child relies on you in the morning, so establishing a habit of being on time is critical to student success: Consider this:
Running late makes us feel rushed and anxious, which is not ideal for learning
Children who are tardy could miss core instructional time and skill practice
Entering the classroom late is disruptive to teachers and students
Students may miss opportunities to socialize with peers before school
Younger children miss important classroom routines and daily announcements
It is difficult to build a classroom and school community without your child
Despite our best intentions, life often finds a way to disrupt our plans. Please know that we are willing to support our Madison families the best we can. Feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s attendance.
The Reading Corner
Ways to Encourage Good Reading Habits
1. Create a reading area. Free from distractions.
2. Encourage reading at home and everywhere in between. Read in
the car or at Grandma’s.
3. Make connections between reading and real life. Does the book
remind your child of something?
4. Keep reading materials at home. Collect books and magazines.
5. Visit the Manitowoc library. The library has many children’s
programs throughout the year.
6. Talk about what your child is reading. Ask your child questions
about the book.
7. Read each night. The more your child is exposed to books, the
more they will progress in reading.
Happy Reading!

Nursing News- Healthy, Active Children
All children are encouraged to live healthy, active lives. It is recommended that children 6 and older need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and children younger than 6 need 3 hours of physical activity every day. Remember that health is not about a specific weight, shape, or size.
It can be difficult for children to be physically active, especially in the winter months. Parents can play a key role in helping their child become more physically active. Some suggestions are:
Emphasize fun. Help your child find a sport they enjoy.
Plan ahead. Make sure your child has a convenient time and place to exercise.
Provide a safe environment where your child can practice and play.
Provide active toys, such as balls and jump ropes.
Play with your child by playing sports, going for a walk, hike, bike ride or building a snowman.
Set limits on screen time for TV, computers, and video games.
Avoid overscheduling of other activities that would prevent them from being physically active.
Let’s have a happy, healthy 2022!
