Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the April 29, 2020, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear Southeastern Families:
As our staff continues to collaborate virtually, we continue to share messages with one another that we would like to share with you. We have learned so much from this experience and there are thoughts written on our hearts that we want you to know. Our staff has compiled these thoughts for you below:
I would like for my parents to know that…..
- I love and miss your child so much!
- We are here for you! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you, your family or your child needs anything!
- We are in this together and perfection isn’t expected.
- Learning is a process and not a perfect product that happens in everyday life, too.
- We appreciate YOU and all that you are doing from home to balance work and school! I know it’s not easy and can empathize. I am trying very hard to make things consistent for you in your child’s eLearning.
- Your children matter, and we miss them dearly! It’s the quality of the time we have had over the quantity of time that keeps us connected through this!
- It’s ok for your child to make mistakes and turn in incorrect work. It happens all the time in the classroom.
- I’m so impressed with the work your kids are creating!
- I so badly miss seeing all the smiling faces and hugs. Thank you for the pictures and videos you are sending me of your kids being active!
- You are doing an AMAZING job, and thanks for the support during this new learning experience.
If I could share one thing with my parents, it would be…...
- Family first! The happiness and well-being of your family is our number one priority.
- I appreciate all the hard work you are putting into eLearning.
- Please don’t stress about getting everything done. Do what you can. Some days it won’t happen, and that’s OK!
- We miss your kids! Give us a classroom full of noise all day everyday over eLearning.
- Don't underestimate the learning that your children are naturally engaging in as a result of this experience. I hope that this time allows your child to explore the curiosities and wonders around them. You now have the privilege that I have had over the course of the school year to see your child learn and grow!
- You are doing an amazing job, and I am so thankful for your support!
- You don’t need to apologize for turning something in “late.” I know we are all doing our very best!
- What you are doing is enough. You are doing a great job...be nice to yourself.
- We're all doing the best we can, and this unique time is just a moment in the life of our students and families, not the whole picture.
- These 9 weeks will not define your child’s academic career. Enjoy some fun downtime with your family.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Chastain

Explorer Families:
There have been so many changes in a short period of time for everyone. I know firsthand how trying it can be to have young kids at home all the time. At our house, I have found some creative ways to keep my kids engaged in interesting & stimulating activities while being outside as often as possible. Below are a few outdoors ideas that might help your family during this time:
- Scavenger hunt - This can be done while taking a walk around the neighborhood or in your yard.
- Take a nature walk - Collect loose parts (leaves, sticks, wild flowers, acorns, rocks, etc.) in nature to design beautiful art work.
- Outdoor obstacle course - Have your child create an obstacle course outside & continue adding materials to make it more of a challenge.
- Art outdoors - Take art supplies outside to do an observational drawing of an item from nature (drawing exactly what you see in front of you).
- Take the inside out - Take a blanket out with toys that typically would be indoor toys and play outside (cars, blocks, dinosaurs, Legos).
- Reading - Find a relaxing spot and read.
- Dance - Have a dance party outside!
Happy exploring your own world!

Hello SES Families!
Second Step program
During the 2019-2020 school year, our students actively participated in the Second Step program. As you know, this is a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum that was taught weekly in our classrooms. This curriculum focused on promoting and teaching social, emotional and academic success. The four units included: Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotional Management and Problem Solving. These skills are vital now more than ever.
I know this is a difficult time for many of our students and families, and Second Step has provided new on-demand, Teacher-Led Lessons and Videos along with free resources for families to access Free of Charge.
Please visit this link which outlines all the resources and tools they are providing.
Coronovirus crisis support
Continuing to navigate supporting kids from home during the coronavirus crisis can be very challenging. Please click this link for additional tips on how to support your students.
I hope that these resources are helpful to you and your child. If you have additional questions or concerns, please email, call or text. jensmith@hse.k12.in.us - 317-572-7203.
