World Kindness Day at Siple
I enjoyed having the opportunity to see and talk to many of you during parent teacher conferences. Please know we want to keep the lines of communication open between you and the school. You do not need to wait for another scheduled conference if you have a question or concern. Contact your student's teacher and they will gladly talk with you and provide you with any information or assistance you need.
November 13th was World Kindness Day. I will be reading a special book about kindness to our students. I will also share a video link to parents so you can hear the story as well. Every student and staff member was encouraged to write a Cardinal Compliment card to someone. Parents you are welcome to join in if you'd like to stop by and pick up a Cardinal Compliment card at the office! We wore our Siple shirts or maroon and Gold on Wednesday the 13th as well to show our school pride and unity. We will do additional activities during the month focusing on these topics as well.
Parents often ask me how they can help teach their children about kindness. My favorite recommendation is for parents to model it in words and action. Your children are learning from everything you say and do. They watch you interact with others. They listen to you speak to and about others. If you were to replay your conversations and watch them would you see kindness, compassion and empathy? Then that's what your children are seeing and learning from you. They are sponges and soak up everything they are exposed to. Thank you for being incredible role models. You can also watch the video link with the story about kindness and talk about it with your children. Wouldn’t it be fun to celebrate World Kindness Day as a family? Maybe you could listen to the story together and then choose an act of kindness you would like to carry out together. If you do, please take a picture and email it to jsimonsen@davisonschools.org. We will create a Celebration of Kindness display in the hallway and add your pictures to the display! When we all choose kindness we help make our school, community, and the world a better, kinder place for everyone!
Happy Thanksgiving!

COUNSELORS CORNER
Attendance Matters
The Parent/Student Handbook states: “Regular attendance contributes not only to the probability of scholastic success but also to the development of attitudes of consistent performance which will carry over into adult life. Daily attendance will result in greater student success and more efficient use of the teacher’s time. Our goal is to maximize student performance and achievement.”
Students are marked either unexcused or excused in our computer system. To be excused a parent/guardian must call the Attendance Line (810-591-5100). Please make sure to send in Doctor notes as these are noted in the system as well. At Siple, reports are printed every week to look at total days absent (or tardy) for the school year (excused AND unexcused). Below is an outline of what happens after reports are generated:
Step 1
Parent/Student Handbook Excerpt
The teacher calls or conferences with the parent after 7 days absent/tardy
Notification
A phone call is made to parent(s)/guardian(s).
Step 2
Parent/Student Handbook Excerpt
The teacher notifies the counselor and principal after 10 days absent/tardy. The principal and counselor will decide on future procedures
Notification
A letter is sent home with absence report attached.
Step 3
Parent/Student Handbook Excerpt
The counselor or principal will make student and parent contacts. Intervention strategies will be initiated
Notification
After 15 days absent/tardy a letter is sent home with absence report attached.
Step 4
Parent/Student Handbook Excerpt
The principal may require a meeting with the GISD Attendance Liaison Officer.
Notification
A letter is sent home after 18 days absent to notify parent/guardian of the meeting.
Step 5
Parent/Student Handbook Excerpt
If attendance improves, the teacher monitors attendance and returns to Step 1. If attendance does not improve for students in Grades 1-6, the principal takes action up to and including filing truancy petition with the court.

DID YOU KNOW.........
Did You Know This Service is Available
There are many great resources for families in the area. This section of the Siple Scoop is dedicated to introducing you to a FREE resource each month.
This month we are featuring Ele’s Place, which is a healing center for grieving children and teenagers. Weekly peer support group programs help children and teens learn how to cope and heal after the death of parent, sibling, or someone close to them.
FUN TO BE FIT
This month we are working on our underhand toss. A great game for underhand toss is Baggo. The kids are having a blast learning how to play Baggo while working on the underhand toss. Baggo is a game that can be played with 2 to 4 players.
The students work together as a team to try to score as many points as they can while trying to cancel out the other teams points. Teamwork and sportsmanship skills are other standards that are incorporated into Baggo. This is a great game that can be bought and played at home as well. If you do have this game I encourage you to play a game with your child but be aware they are really getting good at underhand toss and scoring lots of points!
Please remember with the cold weather coming soon that we still need to wear tennis shoes to class. This is a safety rule. If the student(s) have to wear boots then have them put their tennis shoes in their backpack so they can change into them at school. Thank you!!

COOL TO CARE CAMPAIGN
It's time again to donate canned goods and non-perishable food items to the Cool To Care Food Drive. Every school in Davison is participating.
Our building goal this year is to collect 2 cans per student. That would add up to 822 cans! I am confident we can do that. When we reach that goal we will celebrate with a Pajama Day! Look for more information to be sent home explaining the food drive in greater detail.
Thanks for helping!
