Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 17th-21st
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will continue our unit on Native American regions. Students will take notes each day on a different Native American group and add another portion to our US regional map. Students were given their Totem Pole project directions and rubric last week. These will be due on Monday 24th. The unit test on Native Americans will be on Friday 28th. This will cover all of their notes on Native Americans found in their IANS. This Wednesday students will receive a study guide for their test. The study guide will be due completed on Friday 21st.
- Mrs. Thurston and Ms. Uhlenhakes' Math/ELA Classes: In math, we will begin addition. Students will be shown the standard algorithm for each and we will practice borrowing and regrouping. Other strategies are welcome, however, students will be asked to explain their thinking. Our addition quiz is on Thursday. For ELA, we will continue with character traits. Students will have to identify various traits different character portray from the book they are reading. In writing, Ms. U's students will be paired up with their Pen Pal.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA Classes: In ELA this week, we will examine story elements, such as plot, characters, setting, and theme. We will analyze the stories we are reading by identifying each of these elements. There will be no Junior Great Books story this week. We will also begin our Words Their Way sorts and tests. Your child will have their sorts in their Spelling/Vocab notebooks. In math we will begin our unit on addition and subtraction. Students will be shown the standard algorithm for each and we will practice borrowing and regrouping. If they have another strategy for addition and subtraction, that will be accepted as long as they can explain their thinking. A unit test on addition and subtraction will be on Wednesday 26th.
Seesaw
Please sign up to access your child's page on our classroom Seesaw account. Information went home a few weeks ago in Wednesday folders about how to link up to your child's page. If you need me to resend your child's code, please just let me know. I'll be updating Seesaw with information for parents, as well as pictures of events and activities here at school.
Field Trip Money and Forms Are Due Wednesday
Thank you to everyone who has returned their Greenway Field Trip forms and $9 already. These are due this Wednesday. I also have heard from a few of you about chaperoning. That is WONDERFUL. If you are interested in joining us on October 11th, please let me know. I'll be sending out chaperone information next week.
Boosterthon Pledges Are Due
Boosterthon was a HUGE success! Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful fundraiser for our school. Pledges are due by the end of this week. These can be paid online at funrun.com or sent into school with your child.
Request to Retest
Because mastery is the goal, and everyone has an off day, this year I will be offering "Request to Retest." For any class I teach, if your child believes he or she could do better on an assignment than they did, they have the option to retest. They would need to get a request to retest form from me, fill it out, and have it signed by you. They would then study the information again and retest when ready. The new grade would replace the old. This is not eligible for all assignments, so students are encouraged to check with me first. There is also a 2 week window on requests. Once they receive the grade in their Wednesday folders, students only have 2 weeks to retest that assignment. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding Request to Retest.
