Mrs. Stokes' Notes
Welcoming the New Year,
January is a time for fresh beginnings. I appreciate this time of year as it is a time of reflection and looking to the future. While I am doing this on a personal level, staff is also doing this at the school level. Mid year assessments are providing staff with updated information on how individual students are doing as well as how the school is doing in regards to yearly goals. This year, reading, student social and emotional well-being, and service learning are our areas of focus. If you are interested in updates on specific school goals and the progress that our school is making, attending site council meetings is a great way to get this information and ask clarifying questions.
A few notes of appreciation are in order as Chapman just wrapped up first semester concerts. I always thoroughly enjoy Chapman music concerts. These programs highlight the work and dedication of our students and the talent and passion for music that Mrs. Simondsen has. We are incredibly lucky to have such a robust music program and appreciate the community support and hours put in by Mrs. Simondsen that allows us to maintain this program. The addition of The Eagle Ensemble, violin program sponsored by Homer OPUS, has created additional musical opportunities for our students. Chapman music program truly is a treasure!
Next, I would like to commend the hard work and planning that took place for the Chapman Basketball team K-5 basketball camp. We had a great turnout for this event! Mrs. Klaich and our 6th-8th grade student athletes made basketball fun and a learning experience for over 50 K-5 students. The culminating 3v3 tournament was a highly entertaining and engaging event. All participants showed off their skills and the parent support was awesome. Way to go!
In closing, I wish you all a rejuvenating Winter break. I hope you are able to enjoy time together with family and friends. Wishing you all happiness, health, and safety throughout this wonderful season!
With Warm Regards,
Heidi Stokes

December Highlights
3rd Grade Field Trip
Third grade went to the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center to learn about marine mammals! We explored different skulls and furs to learn about adaptations, used echolocation to hunt for food, and tried to catch krill using various household items (combs worked the best). We had a wonderful time!

Soils Day
On 12/5/23, 3rd-8th grade celebrated World Soils Day with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, part of the USDA. Students rotated through 5 different stations to learn about types of soil, soil health, and soil on the Kenai Peninsula. Students got to get their hands dirty (literally), and learn about an important natural resource.
