Counselor Corner
The best time to practice calming tools is when we are calm. This allows us to understand how they work and how they make us feel before we are upset and not thinking. Students rotated through stations to practice tools like happy thoughts, counting, draw or write about it, take a break, take a breath, and fidgets in a calm spot.
This week, we are focusing on the tool of Inner Coach vs Inner Critic. When triggers happen that upset us, we have an inner voice that talks to us. Helping students identify the difference between their inner coach vs. their inner critic can help them learn how to focus their thoughts on the positive. The inner critic says things like "I am not good enough," "I will never get this right," "No one likes me." On the other hand, the inner coach says: "I am good enough," "I can keep trying and do my best," "People like me."
Our inner coach cheers us along to be the best we can be. The inner coach builds our confidence and helps us feel happier. We each have a choice about where to focus our minds with these inner thoughts.

Cold Weather and Recess
USD 231 provides playground activity areas at each elementary school site. It is important that safety and courtesy rules be followed. Rules will be regularly reviewed with your child by the staff. Students are not to remain on the playground before or after school. For safety reasons, the public is prohibited from the use of the playground activity areas during school hours. All students are expected to participate in recess.
Generally, if a child is too sick to go out to recess, he/she is too sick to be in school. There are exceptions to this rule, but it is a reasonable guideline.
There will be no outside recess when:
The temperature is 20 degrees or below
The wind chill index is 20 degrees or below
The heat index indicates a high risk
There is significant precipitation
Teachers may take their class out briefly for fresh air at their discretion. Students should be prepared for sudden changes in Kansas weather.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please let your child's teacher or Dr. Wachel know.

News from the Nurse
Now that it's cold, virus and flu season, I wanted to send a reminder regarding medications. All medications must be brought in by an adult in the original containers and/or packaging. Students should not bring medications including over-the-counter medications to school. Prescription medications must have a current pharmacy label. A written order from the student's physician is required for all prescription medications and over-the-counter medications that are not included on the District's Med List. The Med List includes acetaminophen, ibuprofen, antacids, cough drops and lotions, creams, ointments. The label on the medication container can not be used as a physician's order. Please call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you, parents, for all you do,
Nurse Amy
