The Great Outdoors
On the Hunt!
Hunting season has arrived, so Kayden Campbell has gathered many of the rules and regulations on hunting various types of game. Do not risk losing your hunting license! Become familiar with the guidelines. Be safe, and happy hunting!
We will begin with rules and regulations for big game. This year, bears have started the hibernation process early due to cold drafts from the mountains. This means that they will be more active and larger than last year. This would be a good thing for hunters if the laws hadn't changed from the original weight in meat last year, to now, which is only 75% of what it was last year, or around 200 pounds less. Though you can only kill 1 bear per season (which is Oct. 16 - Jan. 1) the laws have made it to where you can skin and use bears killed in defense.
Deer: September 23 - January 1, all youth under 18 are allowed to hunt any deer of either sex with any legal weapon, though anyone over 18 is required to use the designated weapon for the season. Archery season started September 9 and lasts until October 19. Black powder starts October 2 and ends October 14. Gun season was a little delayed this year due to migration, but it starts November 9 and ends December 9 (except in Cleveland, Rutherford and Polk counties).
Turkey: Turkey season starts April 7 and goes through April 14. All ages are legal during this time, but only males are allowed for bagging, (without a permit that is). Baiting rules changed this year also. An area is considered baited until 10 days after the bait is consumed, therefore only small traps and cameras are able for use. Another rule changed stating no dogs or trained animals can be used in the spring season, and no fire arms other than ones with a non-bullet projectile can be used until the fall/winter season. You can only have 100 pounds of turkey meat in your possession at a time.
Small Game
Grouse: Now this is my favorite to hunt. Not only are grouse a challenging bird to get but they also taste good and feed many. Season starts October 16 and lasts through February 28. The daily limit is 3, the possession limit is 6 and the season limit is 30 (60 in western North Carolina). You can find grouse near the ground and in bushes because they rarely fly and they are what is known as shy, or fool birds.
Rabbit/squirrel: Rabbit season is delayed due to migration again but squirrel season is still on schedule. Rabbit season is November 18 through February 28. Squirrel season is October 16 through January 1. In western North Carolina there is a limit of 8 animals per day.
WaterFowl
This season is for any water bird including duck, and in some regions, swan. This season started October 4 and ends sometime in late spring (delayed for migration again). Near mid December we will be getting a huge amount of ducks coming in from the north, meaning good luck trying to share with all of the other hunters!
WoodCock
The woodcock season hasn't been set yet but there are going to be a lot of them. At least 1,000,000 are taking a left flank across the state on their journey west, and they are expected to take a detour through South Carolina.

Acrostic Poem
By Scott Cable
Horrifyingly fun.
A quest to get a ton of candy.
Loud and crowded.
Lots of scary costumes.
Overeating candy.
Wanting the best costumes.
Every house in spooky decor.
Even adults dress up.
No house unchecked for candy.
Learning in Biology
I am a junior taking Biology in Ms. Shelton’s class. Recently we have been learning about energy. We have learned that the main source of energy for organisms is the sun. We have also been learning about food chains, food webs, and the transfer of energy between organisms. In the energy pyramid, energy goes from producers to consumers. Now we are starting to dissect owl pellets to show how energy flows from one organism to another organism.
Mrs. Hardy´s Math Class
By Ronald Chapman
In Mrs. Hardy’s Math Foundations, we are learning about graphs, fractions, integers, multi-step equations, solving equations with variables on both sides, and consecutive integer word problems. We are also working with one variable word problems, literal equations, formulas, ratios, rates, conversions, and linear inequalities. In class, we usually work in a group called the Learning Team. There are 7 people on the team.
When we go to class, the team sits at a table and begins working on a brain teaser. One is called “Uphill, Downhill”. An example of a brain teasers is: Grandma walked up a hill at the rate of 2 miles an hour, turned around as soon as she got to the top, and walked down the hill at the rate of 4 miles an hour. The whole trip took her 6 hours. How many miles is it to the top of the hill?
This class is full of rigor in that it is both challenging and fun. We get to collaborate as a group to apply what we’ve learned and solve problems.

Lunar Eclipse
By Kaylee Dennie
A full moon is a lunar phase that occurs when the moon is fully illuminated and can be seen from Earth. This happens when the Earth is directly between the sun and moon. Our last harvest moon occurred September 22nd of last year. This year, our harvest moon was on October 5th.
The full moon is not a solar eclipse, the full moon is a lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse is different from a solar eclipse which is when the moon lines up between the sun and earth. A lunar eclipse is when the Earth lines up between the sun and moon. Usually, to look at a solar eclipse, you need to wear special glasses so you don’t burn your corneas and go blind. When you look at a lunar eclipse, you don’t need eclipse glasses because the moon gets brighter, and doesn’t get as bright or hot as the sun. When you look at a solar eclipse, the sun gets brighter.
Lunar eclipses happen more often than solar eclipses, but sadly, lunar eclipses only happen during full moons. The time between similar lunar phases averages to about 29.53 days.
Have you ever wondered why the color of the moon changes to a bright orange during a lunar eclipse? Well, the reason for this is that the sun’s atmosphere acts as a lense and bends red sunlight into our planet's shadow, and scatters out blue light. This is also the reason sunrises and sunsets appear reddish.
With the full moon coming and going there have been many folktales of increased paranormal activity during full moons. Everyone has their own opinion on this topic, but I believe this isn’t true. Sure, there are a lot of folk tales of werewolves, monsters, and ghosts coming out during a full moon. Sure, the sun, moon, and Earth have a gravitational pull, but that doesn’t increase paranormal activity.
Whether you were hunting for ghosts or taking pictures for your social media, I hope you enjoyed this years Harvest Moon and make sure to get ready for the next lunar eclipse on January, 31, 2018.

English 1
By Cambric Greene
In Mrs. Woody’s English 1 class, we have been learning about multiple things. For instance, we just finished a book called Monster by Walter Dean Myers. It was a book about how a teenager was accused of being involved with a murder. He writes everything he'd been through and makes a movie out of it. We learned about peer pressure, race, poverty, crime, introspection and the judicial system. This made for a very interesting book to read and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
We also have classroom books that we read each 9 weeks, and then do mini project activities reviewing what we have read.
To become better writers, we are reviewing parts of speech. For example, we have English homework that lets us discuss and practice the parts of speech for a better understanding.
A Simple Look into Diversity
Diversity nowadays is a tricky subject and it is frequently talked about in this modern 21st century world, therefore I am going to say some general things about diversity, and points to think about.
Many people’s solution to lack of workplace diversity is to artificially insert diversity using quotas, however this does very little to actually assist diversity, and often it means that people are hired for no reason other than the color of their skin to meet quotas despite the fact they make up approximately 10% of the American population. Often quotas are merely overcompensation. If a black man is more qualified for a job, give him the job. If a white man is more qualified, give him the job.
Nowadays, the go-to solution to racism is to imply that majorities (in the US and Europe: Caucasians) are responsible for the actions done by their ancestors and that they must be treated negatively. This is ridiculous. The way forward is not to regress to Jim Crow with whites on the bottom; this is contrary to the goal.
If a human being can work, act respectfully, and pay their taxes, there is no reason to act unkind towards them. However, many suggest that due to social and economic inequality, minorities must have extra advantages. Fair is not equal and equal is not fair. To be equal, you cannot be fair in the case of an entire group of people. In this current society, as long as you are given the same opportunities as anybody else you are not being oppressed.
Despite this, I do not hate minorities, the concept is simple. People are people, treat people as people. Nothing more, nothing less. Spread a little move love, and a little less hate.
Animals That Hibernate
by Cambic Greene
During winter animals do something unusual unlike we humans do, they hibernate. Hibernation is where an animal or plant spends the winter dormant until the season changes. Here are a few examples:
How to Draw Anime
By Scott Cable
Anime can be traced back all the way to the 20th century with the earliest film dating to 1917. The first generation of animators in the late 1910s included Ōten Shimokawa, Jun'ichi Kōuchi and Seitaro Kitayama, commonly referred to as the "fathers" of anime. The definition of anime is a Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children. Anime originated from Japan also known as the birthplace of anime, therefore here are the steps on how to draw an anime girl.
First sketch a circle and a vertical rectangle.
Next sketch a line one-fourth of the circle.
Add the guidelines face and body curve. For the body curve guideline, draw a triangle for the upper body shape and a semi circle for the hips.
Then, Sketch the extremities as lines and circles. The circles represent the joints.
Next, Add the shape of the girl such as the face, the arms, neck and body shape.
Then, Sketch 2 circles for the eyes.
Next, Sketch lines showing the position of the fingers.
Now, Draw the draft for the hair.
Then, Draw the draft for the dress. You can dress the character with a dress you like.
Next, Draw the outline of the anime girl.
Now, Erase the draft lines.
Finally, Color
Now that you know how to draw an anime girl go practice drawing different clothing or styles of anime characters if you enjoyed this.

Bullying is being mean to another kid over and over again. Bullying includes teasing, talking about hurting someone, spreading rumors, leaving kids out on purpose, and/or attacking someone and yelling at them. Bullying does not always happen in person. Kids bully other kids for many reasons. They may be doing it to copy their friends and think bullying will help them fit in. Cyber bullying is a type of bullying that happens online through text messages or emails. One example is posting pictures that embarrass others. Another example is making fake profiles on websites such as Facebook. Kids being bullied often feel sad, lonely and nervous. They tend to have a hard time at school and may begin to bully others.
Some kids who see bullying happen may not know what to do. They may feel depressed or worried. They may miss a couple of days from school because they may not feel safe. Some kids will stand up for themselves. The best thing to do is to get an get an adult who will stop the bullying.
Between 1 in 4 U.S students say they have been bullied at school. 28% of U.S students in 6-12 grade experienced bullying. 20% of U.S students in grade 9-12 experienced bullying. Approximately 30% of young people admit to bullying others.
Rachel´s Challenge
Written by Amanda Smith
This challenge began after a devastating massacre that happened at Columbine High School in Colorado. Rachel Scott was the first killed in the shooting and her legacy was carried on by her father and many others. After her death, many students reached out and made the things Rachel did to change people's lives noticeable. One of the main ones is that she even helped a young man decide not to take his life.
Rachel’s legacy has touched 22 million people and that number still continues to grow. Her vision was to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion, making schools safer and replacing bullying and violence with kindness and respect.
The Rachel’s Challenge program goes to schools K-12 and share her story along with her intentions. This challenge has reached more than 1,200 schools and businesses, prevented over 150 suicides, bullying and violence percentages have decreased, and caused an increase in community service and acts of kindness.
The smallest efforts in life mean everything to someone. Even if it's just a simple question like “How’s your day been?” You can make an impact on a person's life just by showing you care. This challenge is still being carried on, it continues to change people's lives and change everyone's outlooks on how someone should be treated.
Our entire school was fortunate enough to attend the Chain Reaction program at First Baptist Church in September. It was both a touching and meaningful experience for all of us.

Fun Facts
Did You Know?
By Amanda Smith
Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31st by dressing up as unreal or real things. This holiday has roots from old European traditions. It originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celtics thought that on this day, ghosts of the deceased returned to earth, so they wore animal skins and heads to ward them off. They also built huge bonfires where people gathered to burn crops and practice animal and human sacrifice.
Celebration of Halloween was extremely limited in New England because of the rigid Protestant belief systems they had at the time. The American version of Halloween soon began to emerge when people started having “play parties”, which involved harvesting, dancing, singing, telling fortunes, and even stories of the dead. By the Nineteenth Century, festivals were very common
All Souls Day is the day that all of the poor citizens would beg for food. When they did, people would give them pastries called “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the persons dead relatives.
Black cats were always thought to be bad luck if one crossed your path. People still believe it is to this day. Back in Celtic times , people thought witches would disguise themselves as black cats and that's why people were always so freaked out about them.
These few things are what have helped develop and lead to the widely celebrated tradition of Halloween.
