21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
In honor of the passing of famous American musician Eddie Van Halen a few weeks back, our intro this week centers on a song written by him and bandmate Sammy Hagar called "Right Now". Released in February of 1992 on the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, the song reflects on living for the moment.
Catch your magic moment ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Football
Hobart received the kickoff and set up 1st & 10 at their own 47 yard line. On the 1st play from scrimmage, senior Tyler Turley took the handoff from classmate Riley Johnston and sprinted 35 yards down field to the Gavit 18 before the Gladiators could wrestle him to the ground! Two plays later, Turley powered it in from 3 yards out and it was 7-0 Brickies!
After a Gavit 3-and-out, it took our boys exactly two plays to score again. On the 1st play, Johnston hit junior wideout Miki Djankovich for a 38-yard pass down to the Gladiator 10! From there, Turley - call him butter cuz he's ON A ROLL - scored again on a strong run through the Gavit defensive front! Djankovich sent another extra point through the uprights and Hobart held a 2-touchdown advantage 4 minutes into the game!!
On the Gladiator's next possession ... it's a FUMBLE! FUMBLELAYA! Senior linebacker Cam Smith recovered and Turley scored AGAIN for the hat trick on another two-play drive from the Brickies - this time, he sprinted in from 32 yards out! Djankovich - call him carwash because he's AUTOMATIC - sent the point-after right down the middle and it was 21-0 BRICKIES!!!
Hobart would score 3 more times in the 1st half ... an 8-yard run by junior Marc Enslen, a 23-yard reception by senior Zach Vode - who always seems to be present in The Highlight Zone -and a 20-yard run by junior Chase Homoky to take a COMMANDING 42-0 lead, which set up a running clock in the 2nd half!
The final tally ended up a whopping 56-0! The Hobart D-D-D-DEFENSE ... better known as The Beasts of the Brickyard ... took the word DOMINANT to a whole new level by causing 5 turnovers and holding the Glads to -27 yards of total offense for the entire game! WOW!!!
With the VICTORY, Hobart advances to the 2nd round to face Gary West Side - a winner by forfeit over East Chicago Central, who withdrew from the tournament series due to COVID-19 issues. The IHSAA Sectional 17 SEMIFINAL game between the Brickies & the Cougars will take place NEXT FRIDAY @ THE BRICKYARD!! DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

Girls
It was cold on Saturday morning, but the Lady Brickies were primed and ready to compete against the very best runners in northern Indiana! With 20 teams and 40 individual qualifiers competing, the field of 180 runners was STACKED, which made for an EXCITING race from start to finish! Hornak, who placed 2nd at the Hebron Sectional and 5th at last week's Crown Point Regional with back-to-back PRs, joined Fuentes and Arauz on a mission to make it to Terre Haute! They were as cool as the other side of the pillow and ran like a CHAMPIONS, but unfortunately slipped a little off the pace and couldn't quite race their way back into contention on the state's 2nd largest stage. The top 10 individuals who qualified for state were all situated in the top 15 overall finishers ... which is incredible ... and made it very tough to advance. Hornak placed 68th overall as the first Lady Brickie into the chute ... Fuentes (140th) and Arauz (143rd) ran well also and finished near each other like they had all year!
All three of these young ladies were FANTASTIC representatives of Brickie XC on Saturday and all season long! The experience gained this fall will no doubt help motivate them to get back to this stage again next year ... hopefully with the rest of their teammates in tow ... with a little different mindset that could help them make it all the way down to Terre Haute!
We are SO PROUD of Ella, Mikayla, and Adriana ... and all of the Lady Brickies ... for making such an incredible run this fall through the IHSAA post-season! CONGRATULATIONS on a TERRIFIC season ladies!!
Boys
Leipart, Mattel, and Meagher stepped up to the start line on Saturday with 177 other competitors sharing the same goals ... PR and advance! Through the first mile, the Brickies were in GREAT position within the pack of runners laying it on the line for a shot at state! The second mile that includes a sandy trail through the woods and "Agony Hill" pushed our boys back a bit further into the pack. In spite of running their hearts out over the last mile, it was just too much to overcome against the best runners in our corner of the state. For the boys, the top 10 individuals qualifying for state all placed in the first 17 finishers - WOW!
Leipart finished 61st overall in his last XC race for the Brickies. A 4-time semi-state qualifier, 4-time all-conference runner, and state qualifier a year ago, BRUCE ALMIGHTY has been an impact runner his entire career and SO much fun to watch compete! CONGRATULATIONS on such a GREAT CAREER in purple & gold Bruce ... WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!! Fortunately, we get to see Bruce represent H-town a few more times this spring on the track!
Mattel (86th) & Meagher (99th) both proved they belonged on this stage ... and this experience should be both satisfying and motivating for them as the 2020 season comes to a close and we begin thinking about 2021! GREAT JOB GUYS!
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach A, Coach Curatolo, and Coach Sutton for guiding these fine student athletes so well as they navigated the ups and downs of this season and all the adversity it presented ... and THANK YOU for helping all of our runners continue the PRIDE and TRADITION we have grown to embrace every fall!!
