Estuaries are important because they provide vital nesting and feeding habitats for many plants and animals.
Plants and Animals
Roanoke Sound is home to cattails, sawgrass, giant cordgrass, and black needlerush that provide homes to many waterfowl and fish.
Rivers, Streams, and Waterways
Albemarle Sound, Roanoke River and the Atlantic Intracoastal waterway connect to Roanoke Sound.
Threats
Below are some threats that Estuaries in North Carolina are facing:
- Climate change (the water is rising)- Infilling
- Shoreline development
- Marinas
- Pollution
- Discharge of sewage.
