End of Year update from Superintendent Grumley
May 22, 2020
Hello Garfield Re-2 Family:
We are about to wrap up a most interesting school year. Thinking back to August 12, we had a lot of excitement with the first day of school, - first-day photos, figuring out how to open lockers, picture days, and athletic events. In March, things took a turn, and our communities, nation and world had to make changes like we have not seen in 100 years. Education got flipped upside down. Families had to stay at home and many things that we viewed as given - like toilet paper - became rare, scarce, or out of reach.
One thing that never changed is the care and commitment that the teachers and staff of Garfield Re-2 have for each and every one of the 4,900 students in our district. District leaders developed frameworks to change in-person education to distance learning in just 13 days; Principals, counselors, and school admin attempted to contact each and every child within the first week of school closures just to ask, “Are you alright;” Teachers changed the way they delivered instruction and continued relationships with their students - they learned pets names, sibling names, saw their students through a different lens; Nutrition services workers fed hundreds of students every day, and we ended the year with amazing celebrations of our seniors and honored those students transitioning to the next phase of their educational careers.

Formative Assessment Virtual Summer Institutes
Now more than ever, we're aware of the importance of connection and learning together. In this spirit, we have designed two new Formative Assessment (Virtual) Summer Institutes. These virtual institutes will deliver unique, hands-on professional learning opportunities for teachers, coaches, and school and district leaders who are seeking to deepen their use of formative assessment to engage students in monitoring and directing their own learning.
During the Introductory Formative Assessment Institute, learners new to formative assessment will explore how formative practices help teachers shift away from traditional instructional models towards more equitable practices that promote shared responsibility for learning between students and instructors.
In the Advanced Formative Assessment Institute, teachers, coaches, and leaders will engage in experiential and interactive learning to explore how to support and structure student metacognition through deepening student formative assessment practices such as extending thinking during discourse, student-led questioning, and peer feedback. A goal of the advanced institute is to have learners develop their own informal networks to support their use of formative assessment over time.
The Formative Assessment Virtual Summer Institutes will take place over four days, with 2.5-hour sessions each day.
