Indian Lake Elementary Family Fun Night at Community Market
Indian Lake Elementary Family Fun Night at Community Market Flyer
It all started in 2018. Once a year (except for COVID years), Indian Lake Elementary moved their Family Game Nights to the local Community Market in Lakeview, Ohio. The coordinator for Family Game Nights, Pam Scarpella, contacted the managers of Community Market to see if they would be interested in partnering with the school to have the Family Game Night at their store. They were excited and more than willing to allow them to hold this event there.
The Family Game Night committee planned what the night would look like and what other community members to invite to be part of it. They decided this would be a Math Night where scavenger hunts would be created for each grade level, kindergarten through 5th grade. Students could participate in activities such as taking a guess at the M&M estimation jar, building a treat out of pretzels and marshmallows, selecting a free book purchased with grant dollars, and weighing produce for prizes with the help of the PTO. Students also decorated paper grocery bags to hold local veterans' groceries.
Community Market donated cookies to all students and gave parents 10% off coupons. They also donated two turkeys that parents could win in a raffle. The local McDonald’s and other area businesses donated prizes. The fire department and law enforcement were there to greet all families, and a nurse from Mary Rutan Hospital was there to teach about healthy eating habits.
This great event shows how the school and the community come together to provide a fun-filled evening for their students and their families and strengthen students' mathematical skills. According to the National Math and Science Initiative(2023), “these partnerships foster engagement, mutual support and shared responsibility for students' success.” They look forward to this night each year!

REGION SPOTLIGHT
Challenging Behaviors: Expect Success Professional Development Series
Behavioral challenges occur on a continuum, including those that prevent a student from participating in educational opportunities, limit social interaction, or interfere with academic
progress. These “behaviors” could be disruptive and dangerous; however, concerning behaviors
also include those that are passive, such as the student that does not participate in class or does
not complete academic assignments.
Throughout the year, SST6 has partnered with OCALI to offer the Challenging Behaviors: Expect Success professional development series to more than 15 multidisciplinary teams across the region. Through three in person training days and two onsite student observations, teams have learned to utilize a functional behavior assessment process to determine appropriate supports for students with complex needs, identify underlying characteristics and issues that drive students to engage in actions and behaviors that interfere with learning, utilize student strengths to help build a behavior intervention plan, and develop and implement intervention plans utilizing evidence-based practices that target teaching the student critical skills for academic and social-emotional success.
Thank you to Denise Sawan Caruso and Megan Trowbridge, our OCALI partners, for helping us provide such a valuable training to our region!
