Active Opportunities
The community of Strongsville has a fantastic Recreation Center. The Recreation Department has many programs to help keep your child fit and active. I encourage you to work with your student to find an activity of interest. The Spring schedule for Strongsville Recreation Sports Programs arrived at Drake this week. Click HERE for a copy.
Organized team sports are not for everyone. But I still encourage you to take advantage of the Recreation Center and its outstanding opportunities for small group and individual activity. Drop off your student at the Rec Center regularly. Better yet, go TOGETHER!
Speed Stacking
During the past few weeks in Mr. Weir’s Physical Education class, the 1st and 2nd graders have been learning how to cup stack. Cup stacking or speed stacking as it is also known, has been around for four decades, dating back to the 1980s when demonstrations first appeared on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. Speed stacking is used in more than 43,000 schools worldwide as part of their PE curriculum. Speed stacking teaches hand-eye coordination, quickness, and ambidexterity. It promotes brain development by forcing students to use both sides of their brain, simultaneously. For more information - and some unbelievable videos - click here to visit the website. You may end up ordering some for your family today.
Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) Update
On Thursday, 1/28, the District held our annual kindergarten parent informational meeting. This was also the first opportunity for parents to put down a deposit to reserve a place for their child(ren) in the FDK program. We have reached our cap of 125 students for the FDK program for 2016-17 and will not be accepting any additional deposits at this time. However, parents that would like to have their child(ren) attend FDK can still submit an intent form and be placed on the waiting list, in the order received. Click here to access the intent form and additional information on the kindergarten registration process. To submit your intent form, you can email it to devangelista@scsmustangs.org or mail or drop it off at the address listed on the form. Should we enroll enough students that would warrant an additional section of FDK, parents on the wait list will be contacted in order of receipt of their intent form.
February 25th - Middle School Transition Parent Meetings
Many parents are asking me about middle school. It is natural to have questions about your student's next step. I spent 12 years in Strongsville's middle schools, and I can assure you that everything will be in place for your student to have a fantastic experience. The first step in preparing you and your student will take place on the evening of Thursday, 2/25/16. Two meetings will be held at the Strongsville High School Auditorium, at 6:00 p.m. for incoming 6th graders, and 7:00 p.m. for incoming 7th graders. Middle School administrators and guidance counselors will be on hand to meet with parents to discuss all things middle school; courses, scheduling, and questions. I recommend that you add this to your calendar.
