First Grade Arborists
This week our first graders learned about protecting the Earth by studying deforestation and afforestation. They met with the arborists from Sav-a-Tree and learned about the tools that are used to assess the health of trees, including mallets, magnifying glasses, laser pointers and tablets. Arborists assess trees to find hollow pockets, animals, insects and other things that affect the health and safety of trees. Students had the opportunity to learn about different types of trees and differentiate between real and fake trees. They even learned about a Rainbow Eucalyptus tree.
Hawthorne Library Update with Ms. MacCullough
Hello from the library! It’s been a busy month! Each grade level enjoyed the wonderful adventures of Worm and Caterpillar are Friends by Kaz Windness. This is an early graphic novel with gorgeous illustrations. It’s a moving story and we got to talk about the power of friendship and how we can be friends with others who are different from ourselves. Students also got to try out drawing the characters and making their own graphic novels.
First graders also enjoyed solving the Mystery of the Missing Pet Treats while second graders and kindergarteners enjoyed a variety of mystery stories such as King and Kayla and the Case of the Lost Tooth by Dori Hillestad Butler.
In honor of the solar eclipse we spent a little time in outer space learning about exoplanets in XO, Exoplanet by Deborah Underwood and students were excited to explore the space section in the library.
In Library Enrichment classes, we just started our Earth Day PebbleGo research and are learning about all the ways people can take care of our planet.
Our One Book, One School celebration will be from April 29th-May 3rd. I will be sending home a letter in the next two weeks with all the details of this exciting celebration.
Until then, happy spring!
