BMS Counseling Corner 2023-24
Briarhill Middle School Counseling Department
May 2024
Hello!
We are in the final weeks of school!
As we approach the last part of the year, please review your child's grades in Skyward and help them keep on track during this time. The "MYR" is the projected final grade for the year.
In grades 6–8, promotion to the next grade level shall be based on an overall average of 70% on a scale of 100% based on course-level standards (essential knowledge and skills) for individual core subject areas: a grade of 70% or above in both mathematics and in ELA/Reading, and a grade of 70% or above in either social studies or science. Board Policy EIE Local.
A student may receive full credit for a HIGH SCHOOL 1.0 credit course if ONE of the standards below is met.
The student passes both semesters of the course with a 70 or above in each semester; OR
The student fails the first semester of the course but has a sufficient score in the second semester resulting in a grade of “70” or higher when averaged with the first semester; OR
The student passes the first semester and scores 65 or above in the 2nd semester. IF the two semester grades averaged together result in a grade of “70” or higher, the student will receive full credit for the course. If the student scores below a 65 on the second semester, the student may not grade average for full credit.
Skyward and Canvas are great tools to look for missing assignments and grades.
Teachers tutor during the morning from 8:15-8:50. If you are not sure of their availability, check with the teacher or check the weekly newsletters that each grade level sends out.
Counselors are here to help with academic check-ins as well. If you have a need or concern, please reach out to your grade level counselor!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bonner and Ms. Mason
SB 9 Lesson
Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires anti-victimization lessons be taught in all public schools. Texas legislature also requires parents/guardians to opt-in to these lessons. In 6th-8th grade, we will cover the SB9 topics on the prevention of Child Abuse, Dating Violence, Family Violence, and Sex Trafficking. Most families have already indicated their opt-in or opt-out status in their Skyward Back to School forms. If you have not yet completed the SB9 form in Skyward, you will receive an email from our counseling team. Please see the Parent/Guardian Preview which provides the actual video your student(s) will watch, as well as, more information regarding these prevention lessons. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Mrs. Bonner or Ms. Mason.
