DID YOU KNOW?
SLEEP AND SCHOOL SUCCESS ARE RELATED
As we head into Winter Break, your student may want to stay up late. Did you know the impact that sleep has on children? More and more studies are showing a link between lack of sleep and academic and behavioral issues. In one study, all students were given an initial test and then divided into two groups. One group went to bed one hour early while the other group went to bed one hour later. When given a similar test after just one day, the students who got an extra hour of sleep improved their test scores! Those who had gotten less sleep did not. CNN has also reported that less sleep is linked to increased behavior issues such as temper tantrums, difficulty coping with emotions, and poor social skills.
Children in elementary school need between 10 and 11 hours of sleep EVERY NIGHT.
Signs your child may not be getting enough sleep:
Falling asleep in the car or watching TV
Sleeping significantly longer on weekends and school vacations
Impulsivity
Irritability
Sleep deprivation can affect:
Memory
Judgement
Motivation
Focus
Academic success
Behavior
Things you can do at home:
Set a bedtime that allows for about 10 hours of sleep. For example, if your child has to get up for school at 7AM, he or she should go to bed at 9PM.
Enforce bedtime –you cannot make your child fall asleep but you can make sure that he or she is in bed settling down for rest.
Allow children to read or read with them prior to turning off the lights.
Decrease sugar and caffeine in the child’s diet.
Turn off video games, TV, and other screens 30 minutes before bed time to help children wind down and fall asleep.
Physical activity every day.
So enjoy your break and relax bedtimes over the first week. But make sure that your student is ready to come back ready to learn by putting those good routines back in place BEFORE school starts on January 6
NURSING NOTES from Mrs. Mandel
Happy New Year,
Make sure to help your children practice good hand washing and covering their cough to help stay well during cold and flu season.
We are very low or out of boys and girls uniform pants sizes 5-10. Please send in any old uniform pants that no longer fit your child. We can always use uniform pants, skirts, dresses, leggings, tennis shoes 10-4. So as your kiddos grow please keep us in mind for those old uniforms. They are greatly appreciated and always put to good use. Thanks
It's not too late to get your flu shot!

We need additional information on the academic needs and performance of individual students in order to provide instruction at the appropriate level for each child. All students will take a standardized test to begin to collect this information after Winter Break. If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Kim Jovic at kjovic@perryschools.org.
