Chess Club Corner
Lowell made its team maiden voyage to the 2014 K-8 Illinois State Chess Tournament on March 15-16. It was a very tough competition with 93 registered schools/teams, but Lowell persevered. Every team member had at least a win/draw over the two days of competition.
- Congratulations to Jacob Horn; 5th place in the 4th-5th grade 800-999 ratings Division.
- Congratulations to Jordan Winter; 17th place in the 4th-5th grade Under 500 ratings Division.
- Congratulations to the Lowell team; 18th place in the 4th-5th grade category.
This is very impressive considering two factors: our team had a team average rating of 437, compared to the 1st place team which had an average of 1323, and our team was paired up with very high rated players.
A very BIG thank you, and congratulations to the following members of the Lowell Chess Team, who represented Lowell at the 2014 K-8 Illinois State Tournament on March 15-16, for their bravery, perseverance, and a fabulous end to the season:
- Nikhil Cowart
- Aidan Flanagan
- Gabrielle Horn
- Jacob Horn
- Mollie Hufnagel
- Christina Schierhorn
- Daniel Schierhorn
- Jordan Winter
Art to Remember Update
Each student should receive a personalized brochure from “Art to Remember”, showing an image of their own artwork on sample products. You have an opportunity to order a variety of keepsakes with the artwork on it. While the brochure does not show all the products, you may view all options on the following website.
http://arttoremember.com/fundraising-programs/keepsake-programs/products/
If you choose to place an order, they are due back to Mrs. Roche by Monday, April 14th. If you cannot or do not make an order, they do not have to return the brochure. All student artwork will be returned to the school after the orders are delivered.
This is a great way to support our Art Curriculum. Thank you for your support!
Discovery Day is coming!
Discovery Day plans are underway! Thanks to all of you who have returned your forms and your willingness to help! We really appreciate it! Discovery Day will be on Monday, June 9th this year and we are working on the list of activities! Discovery Day is held during the last week of school and it is an opportunity for our students to grow, stretch, learn, discover, and try activities by introducing them to new and unique learning opportunities.
During the morning of Discovery Day, students will participate in three activities. Discovery Day is a collaborative effort made up of parent/family volunteers, teachers, staff, and some outside vendors.
Leaders, co-leaders, assistants, helpers are all welcome and all are appreciated! Have a passion for something, a talent or hobby.......come and share it with our Lowell Students. We hope you will consider joining us and being part of the fun! Volunteer sign up sheets have been sent home. The list of potential activities is linked below for your review. Please return them to the office as soon as possible.
Also, the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon will take place immediately after Discovery Day again this year. Please join us as we honor all of the volunteers that have worked so hard to make it another great year at Lowell. If you are interested in helping with this special luncheon, please check the box on your Discovery Day form and you will be contacted.
We are also looking for Field Day volunteers. Field Day occurs in the afternoon on June 9th and we need volunteers to assist the PE teachers. It is an afternoon full of action and fun!
