TUBMAN TRIBUNE
October 1, 2021
Dear Families,
Dear HTMS Families,
I am writing with bad news and good news as Suezann Kitchens, one of our two Asst. Principals is leaving PPS to work for the Multnomah Education Service District. She has deep roots in Alternative Education and will be an administrator at Helensview School. Her last day will be Monday Oct. 4th and I thank her tremendously for all she did to launch this school year and support my transition into Interim Principal. The good news is that Friday Oct. 1st is the first day for Rina Shriki, Ms. Kitchens' replacement. I feel fortunate we are bringing aboard a person with her skill set and experience and am extremely confident that she will be an asset for our community. Please see the attached document for her introduction/bio.
Our HTMS Admin. Team 2021 - 22 is finally set:
- Kevin Bacon - Interim Principal
- Nancy Pierce - AP
- Rina Shriki - AP
- Liz Casson-Taylor - Site Support Administrator (.5 time)
The transition continues. Please know that the majority of students are transitioning well but a smaller percentage need extra support and guidance back to in-person instruction. We continue to re-build systems and have developed a separate letter outlining our challenges. Please click this link to see the letter and please speak to your scholar(s) regarding the importance of being a positive contributor to the learning environment.
Sincerely,
Kevin Bacon
TicTok Challenge
Tik Tok is a popular social media outlet with school age students and the following are the current "challenges" posted on the site:
August - Sleep in and be late.
September - Mess up a toilet/vandalize restrooms
October - Smack a staff member on the backside
November - Kiss your friends girlfriend at school
December - Deck the halls and show your bu** in the hall
Please know that there are postings for every month of this school year and that the mindset being promoted is more damaging than the actual "challenge". This is an opportunity for all of us to speak to the danger of the media controlling who we are and becoming versus who we grow to be intrinsically. We have faith in our scholars and their ability to rise above the challenges of the moment while working be their best selves.

Site Council is a collection of parents, staff, and community members and monitors school progress toward our school improvement goals. The Site Council meets once a month in the evenings. We are looking for four parents to join with us in the work to make Harriet Tubman Middle a world class place for learning. Please complete the HTMS Site Council Nomination Form to volunteer or email csmithmyles@pps.net to learn more.
