News & Updates
Welcome MVLA Families,
We are counting down the days until we get to welcome our students to the 2023-24 school year! The staff is excited to welcome students to campus on Wednesday, August 23rd.
Enrollment has be ebbing and flowing. We were sad that Mrs. Norman transferred to CELC but excited that it looks like we will be welcoming a new primary grade teacher. The Districted posted for the job last week. Thank you to Ms. Turner, Mrs. Broderick, and Ms. Pelant for getting the classroom ready for the future teacher. I am excited to see the new "nook" that you are creating.
Please stay safe and dry while through these next few days on alert. Dr. Newman will keeping in communication with the principals over the next 24 hours on any weather related updates. We will make sure that families are updated if anything changes. Here is a link for information on ways to stay safe during rain and flooding. Also see Dr. Newman's communication below.
Here are a few updates to help keep you informed as we approach our first day of school:
ALL AUSD parents- please take the time to fill out the free/reduced application at https://www.alpineschools.net/o/ausd/page/free-and-reduced-meal-program to help our schools continue to receive Title I funding to support our students. Click on the SchoolCafe button to fill out the application.
Mark your calendars for picture day. See flyer below for more information.
Please see the information below about AUSD's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) below.
As a reminder to 7th grade parents, all 7th graders must have their TDAP shot by the first day of school in order to attend in-person learning. We have reached out to families and are still waiting to hear back from a few. Please bring your updated records to the CELC/MVLA office. This is a state mandate that we do not have control/choice over.
The school will provide all the school supplies needed for the classroom. The only school supply that you should send is a backpack. We do have a few donated backpacks on hand for those that are interested. Please let us know if you have a need.
Teachers will send out a wish list for "want" items. If you are willing and able to donate these items to the classroom, it is very much appreciated.
Although we have water filling stations, we like to have water bottles on hand for student that forget to bring a refillable bottle. Donations of water are always appreciated. You can drop them off in the office.
For the safety and security of students and staff, gates are locked during school hours. The gate between CELC and MVLA is locked by 9:15 a.m. and remains locked the rest of the school day.
MVLA students may enter through the CELC or SHES gate. If they arrive after 9:10 a.m., they will need to go through the SHES gate. MVLA students are picked up (by the bus or parent) in front of SHES.
If you pick your student up early, please check in at the SHES office.
The first day of onsite class is August 23rd.
- AUSD will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students this school year.
- Breakfast is available at the SHES cafeteria.
- Students may choose to eat a cafeteria lunch or bring a sack lunch from home.
- Please send your student to school each day with their fully charged Chromebook, a backpack, refillable water bottle, a healthy snack, and a lunch (unless they are getting a cafeteria lunch).
- Kindergarten parents- please include a change of clothes in a ziplock bag in their backpack. Potty accidents tend to happen early in the year.
We LOVE volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please pick up the required paperwork in the CELC/MVLA office.
Stay tuned for more information about upcoming events and field trips.
Before school care is available. Please see the flyer below or contact Aimee Hatfield, AUSD's ESS Coordinator, at ahatfield@alpineschools.net for rates and more information.

A Messages from Dr. Newman
The following message was sent out by our Superintendent on Sunday, August 20, 2023:
Dear AUSD Families,
We want to keep you informed about the status of our school openings. We are closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions and staying up-to-date with all weather reports and alerts. We are also aware that San Diego Unified decided earlier today to close its schools tomorrow. The storm is expected to fully pass through our community in the early hours of tomorrow. We intend to have all our schools open tomorrow.
We understand that maintaining a consistent learning experience is of utmost importance. We also understand how much our families depend on our schools to provide a secure environment for their children throughout the workday. Consequently, we want to affirm our commitment to keeping our schools open as long as conditions permit.
Please rest assured that the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families are of paramount importance to us. We will continue to keep a watchful eye on the weather developments. We will make any necessary adjustments to our plans to ensure our students' best possible learning environment.
Please stay updated by checking district and school emails, social media, and school websites for further announcements. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As you know, San Diego County may experience some intense weather this weekend because of Hurricane Hilary, which has formed in the Pacific Ocean, just south of Baja California. Although forecasters say it’s likely to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches our county, there is the potential for extreme weather, such as high winds, flash flooding, rain, and thunderstorms.
We will monitor the storm as it makes its way toward the region and will communicate with you through our regular channels if the storm impacts school facilities or operations.
We encourage you to sign up for Alert San Diego and visit the County of San Diego website to enhance your preparedness for storms and flooding. Please also download our District app, which is available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.
AUSD LCAP
The Governor's budget for education mandated that every school district in California needs to update its Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is a component of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The LCAP is intended to be a three-year plan to improve student achievement by setting annual goals for the district in eight priority areas. Each of the priorities has established data requirements to track district progress improving student achievement. The LCAP requires Districts to gather input from students, teachers, parents, and community members to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the District. Our District staff worked together with all of our stakeholder groups to gather input and craft the draft of our Local Control Accountability Plan. Here are AUSD's 2023-24 LCAP Goals:
Goal #1: Effective Instruction and Curriculum - Provide equitable access to high-quality classroom curriculum and instruction in an inclusive environment that promotes student success.
Goal #2: Safe and Respectful Environments - Ensure all school sites are safe and have healthy and welcoming climates for staff, students, and their families so that all students feel connected and are motivated to attend and ready to learn.
Goal #3: Equitable and Culturally Responsible Systems - Ensure systems and processes eliminate barriers to student success and are equitable and culturally responsive to the needs of our students and their families.
