Principal's Message
A very happy springtime to all Woodgrove Wolverines! As we send this out, we’ll be in the midst of our spring break and I do hope all students, parents, teachers, and families are enjoying this time together.
Upon returning to school in April, we’ll have one week left in the 3rd quarter, and then off to the 4th quarter we’ll go! Monday, April 12, is a holiday for students, and Friday, April 16, will be an asynchronous day for all students. Then, beginning on Tuesday, April 20, students who selected hybrid will come to school four days per week while we continue with our concurrent teaching model. We have had some requests for students who chose DL to return to school. After April 20, we will review each situation individually to determine if the request can be accommodated.
We are very pleased that we will be able to hold a graduation ceremony for our seniors this year where they can all be together as a class! Graduation is set for Thursday, June 17, at 8 AM. Seniors will need to be at the school at 6:30 AM. Additional information, such as the number of guests per student, is forthcoming and we will share that with seniors and their parents as we establish our stadium capacity with LCPS Support Services and the Governor’s orders.
Also, springtime is a very busy time for our students, especially our seniors. If you have a son or daughter preparing to graduate, as we receive more information about what we can do on campus, information from our Senior Class Sponsor, Ms. Brianne Allis, will be sent to seniors and families as dates and times are finalized. If you have any questions about senior activities, please reach out to Ms. Brianne Allis @ Brianne.Allis@lcps.org.
Counselors are contacting each of their students to discuss course selections for the 2021-2022 school year. If your daughter or son has not yet submitted their selections, please have them contact their counselor to sign up for classes for the coming school year.
SOL testing will begin on April 19. Included in this newsletter is the schedule for the tests. Information was sent to parents and guardians of each student scheduled to take an SOL test this spring. If you have any questions, please contact our Testing Coordinator, Ms. Justine Jarvis @ Justine.Jarvis@lcps.org.
Also, please note that AP testing will take place from May 18 through May 28. This schedule is included in the newsletter also. Please contact Ms. Jarvis regarding any questions for those tests as well.
For students who may need assistance with a class, we have learning labs available for students during their study halls. Teachers from each department are available to provide support for students. Here is the link to the learning lab schedule which also contains the meet links for each lab. WHS - Learning Labs
Please continue to check our school calendar for any upcoming fine arts and athletic events. We still have significant restrictions in place on what we can host at the school and the number of attendees; however, we are streaming events that you can enjoy watching in the comfort of your home. I assure you, watching and cheering for our Wolverines on the stage and the fields of play will be awesome and inspiring experiences!
Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy spring – thank you for your continued support!

Sports Injuries
Shin Splints
Student-athletes often complain about “shin splints” at the beginning of a sports season. The word “shin splints” is a catch-all term. There are a variety of injuries that can cause pain in the front of the lower leg between the knee and ankle. However, the most common is intense bone pain along the posterior/medial aspect of the tibia (large shin bone) caused by overtraining without properly conditioning the bones and muscles of the lower leg.
Shin splints are a “bone” injury not a “tendon” injury as once previously thought. When student-athletes place stress on the lower leg from running and jumping, the body will naturally attempt to strengthen the shin bone. However, in order for the body to make new bone (osteoblasts), it must first get rid of the old bone (osteoclasts). But when student-athletes place too much stress, too soon, on the lower leg, the bone strengthening cannot keep pace which then causes intense shin bone pain.
The only real treatment for shin splints is REST! Once the pain and tenderness has subsided, the student-athlete may then begin a gradual pain-free return to running and jumping. Cross-training (biking and swimming) are also helpful in maintaining conditioning without increasing pain. Ice and taking anti-inflammatory medication will also help with the pain and inflammation. Studies show that approximately 50% of the time, the use of orthotics (arch supports) may also be helpful in reducing shin pain by correcting problems with the way the student-athletes’ foot strikes the ground (pronation) while running and jumping.
If the student-athletes don’t take the proper time to heal and continue to try and run and jump through pain, the repeated stresses on the bones can result in a “stress fracture”. Treatment for stress fractures requires even longer rest than shin splints (usually 6-8 weeks).
Fitness
Is there a Right Shoe for Runners?
Cushion, Stability and Motion Control: Three kinds of running shoes for three different foot types. This is what we’ve been told from shoe companies and running magazines. Just pick the right one, they say, and you’ll reduce your risk of injury. Or maybe not. New research suggests that selecting running shoes based on this rule of thumb will do almost nothing to prevent injuries.
The rationale behind this shoe-prescription approach is that the shapes of runners’ feet affect their running mechanics in different ways and specific shoe types will compensate for those differences, thereby decreasing injury risk. Cushioned shoes are supposedly better for people with high arches, stability shoes for normal arches, and motion control for low arches. But in a recent U.S. Army study of Marine recruits found that those who wore shoes supposedly appropriate for their foot shape suffered just as many injuries as those in another group, who all wore stability shoes.
The findings, published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, are consistent with another recent study by an exercise scientist at the University of Wisconsin. A study on female runners similarly found that assigning shoes based on foot type did not prevent injuries.
The focus on shoe type is misleading, because “what the footwear industries don’t advertise can have just as much impact on injuries”. In fact, the real question may not be what kind of shoe, but how much shoe. A Harvard University study used barefoot runners to study the evolution of running and found that less may be better. They found that runners wearing shoes tend to land heel-first, generating very high collision forces. Without shoes, runners tend to land on the front of their feet, which reduces that force.
Until more is understood about the complex relationship between shoes and injury risk, the take home advice from many experts is to simply buy shoes that feel comfortable and then just listen to their own body.

Woodgrove Scholarships
DEADLINE IS APPROACHING!!!
Most WHS Scholarship applications are due on April 9th
In an effort to streamline the application submission process and to enable students to submit applications electronically this year, students will be using Schoology to submit applications for our school and community scholarships listed on Naviance and Schoology. To help students with this transition, counselors presented the new application process to all seniors during Advisory. In addition, step-by-step instructions and videos can be found on the school website under Scholarships & Financial Aid.
We encourage ALL seniors to review the WHS Scholarship List either on Naviance or on the school website and to take advantage of the opportunities available only to Woodgrove Seniors!
Applying to our school and community scholarships is the first step when looking for funds for post-secondary education. Find other opportunities here.
In addition, Loudoun County is continually updating their website which lists the scholarships for 2020-2021 along with application links and submission requirements. Bookmark the LCPS Scholarship List page to stay informed throughout the school year. Updates are also added to the Career Center Weekly Newsletter emailed to parents and students every Friday.
Senior Surveys & Spotlights…Coming Soon!
Every April, the Career Center Specialist meets with each senior to conduct a year end survey to discover students post secondary plans, scholarships received and create their senior spotlight. Due to the pandemic, each senior will need to complete an online Senior Survey & Spotlight. We will use this information in the survey to tell us where to send your final transcript and record your post-secondary plans.
This is a required step for every senior!!
Seniors will be receiving an Advisory lesson on how to access and complete the survey and spotlight in early April. When completing the survey, we understand that not all information may be known at that time. For this reason, know that once started, students are able to return to the survey to update any information previously entered and/or to add any new information (ie. scholarships received, secondary plans, etc)
Surveys & Spotlights are due Friday, May 14th

High School Parking Lot WiFi Access
In our efforts to continually improve and meet the challenges of a large school district, we are deploying solar powered WiFi to high school parking lots.
Each of our high schools will be equipped with a solar powered, cellular wireless access point that will provide coverage to a portion of each schools parking lot. This will allow for social distancing and access to digital resources for those in need of internet access. Each area depicted is an estimation of coverage and capacity may be impacted by weather, number of connected users and other factors. Areas selected are also monitored by LCPS Safety and Security patrols, camera's and other techniques to provide a safe environment.
