Solar Eclipse
On Monday, April 8, 2024, people within a 124-mile-wide band in the state of Ohio will experience a total solar eclipse.
In Columbus the eclipse will start on April 8 around 1:55 PM with the most coverage happening around 3:12 PM and will end at 4:26 PM.
Areas in Ohio that are outside the path of totality will experience a partial eclipse. A total solar eclipse is a rare and spectacular event. On average, one happens somewhere on the Earth only once every 1.5 years. Only 21 total solar eclipses have crossed the lower 48 states in the entire existence of the United States.
The last total solar eclipse visible in Ohio was in 1806. The next total solar eclipse in Ohio will be in the year 2099.
Solar Eclipse Glasses:
You MUST use viewers or glasses with special filters to look directly at the sun without burning your eyes.
Every CCS student will be sent home with a pair of eclipse glasses!
Libraries and Community Rec Centers will hand out FREE Eclipse glasses. They will likely run out, so please plan to get them before April 8.
Here's a link to verified suppliers of eclipse glasses for purchase.
CML Solar Eclipse Watch Party
Columbus Metropolitan Library Main Branch (96 S. Grant Ave), in partnership with COSI, will host a solar eclipse event with hands-on science activities, free solar eclipse glasses as well as COSI Solar kits (while supplies last), and outdoor games.
Bring a blanket or lawn chair and hang out with fellow eclipse watchers in this shared milestone moment!
Free parking at Main Library's attached garage.
Hilltop Library will also have a watch party without the COSI partnership.
Creating a Safe Fit for Youth
- For a better glasses fit, punch one hole in each arm of the glasses near the back of the curved part that goes behind the ear. (You may choose to use staples or tape instead.)
- Using ribbon or elastic, cut two equal pieces and tie each piece to each punched hole. Bring each piece around the back of the youth’s head and tie a knot to secure the fit.
