What is SIDS?
What puts the baby at risk?
- born prematurely
- low weight
- mother under age of 20
- many siblings in close age
- certain ethnic backgrounds (African Americans higher risk)
- being a boy (ratio 1.5-1)
Symptoms
Ways to prevent SIDS?
- sleep on back
- choose bedding carefully
- avoid overheating
- regular prenatal care
- don't smoke or drink
- keep away from cigarette smoke
- have all of baby's vaccinations
- breastfeed if possible
Statistics and deaths that occur
~ leading cause of death in infants
- 2,226 babies dies in 2009
~ babies that sleep in parents bed have a 40 times greater risk
~ babies of mothers who smoke during pregnancy, have a 3 times greater risk
~ SIDS rates declined from 130.3 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 39.7 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2013
