Principal's Weekly Update
Term 3 Week 4
RAISE Goal: to show respect for my school and my property by picking up after myself
Te reo phrase of the week: ka pai tō korero (please speak nicely)
Kia ora,
What a funny old week it has been. Deja Vu has been mentioned a few times, along with some accompanying sighs. With Covid-19 again returning, it is one of those things that we hoped wouldn’t happen, but now that it has let’s make sure that we’re organised and ready for any increase/decrease in the alert levels. I think the best thing for us is that we’ve been here before. We know what alert levels 2 - 4 look like for Matapu School and our community. We know what worked last time, what the challenges were, and how levels 3 and 4 impacted our learners and their whanau.
Since the news on Tuesday night we have been regularly holding staff meetings to prepare for any increase in alert levels. Teachers have been planning for distance learning by setting up our students’ home learning books with an info sheet for parents, logins for online resources, and paper based activities. We have even been trialling a couple of distance learning blocks throughout the day, to make sure that we are prepared to quickly shift to distance learning if needed.
What we need our families/community to do:
Please make sure your details are up to date - you should be receiving our school newsletter by email and by the school app. Our website has easy to follow instructions about how to install the school app, please visit: https://www.matapu.school.nz/contact/school-app-info
If we do move to an increased alert level a survey will be sent to you via the school app. It will be regarding your child/ren attending school under alert level 3. Please complete it ASAP to help us identify how many bubbles we will need to set up.
I, like all of you are hoping we get some positive news this afternoon, but it’s important to plan ahead just in case. With the majority of weekend sports cancelled, it is an excellent opportunity for you to dust off those Mum and Dad sports skills, share some glory days, and show your kids how it’s done at home. Have a great weekend. Stay safe and keep well.

Week 4 has come and gone, and wow what a week it has been! We had Jono come to talk about his job in the Police. The highlight of our day was getting to hold up his vest, we were all surprised how heavy it was! Earlier in the week we reminded ourselves about how we can have better hygiene in our class and created informative posters to explain this. We have been working hard on learning our times tables in class and have loved getting new high scores on 'Hit The Button'. You can check out each day's score on Seesaw.

Be part of the election team
Hiring is underway for the 2020 General Election with people needed to fill over 25,000 roles.
"This is an opportunity to be part of the election team and help voters have their say at the 19 September election and referendums,” says Chief Electoral Officer, Alicia Wright.
A variety of roles are available including working in voting places and counting votes. The work can last from one day to a couple of months over the election period.
“They are all paid roles and we’ll provide the training and support you need to do a good job,” says Alicia Wright.
“Voting places are run by people who live in the area, so it’s a great way to get involved in your community.”
