Last Week's Learning
Last week we also read stories to our Kindergarten Book Buddies! Both classes of kids enjoy this special time together. Check out some pictures below!
What We Are Studying This Week
DOL/Journal -- We will do DOL Week #7 each morning this week. On Friday students will take a quiz over the DOL sentences we corrected. Students will also use the prompts for Week #7 to write at least one page in their journals this week.
STARS Club -- Our reading clubs continue, so check with your child about the book his/her group is reading.
Math -- We continue to work on Topic 3 on place value. This week we will be rounding to all of the different place values. The students will learn a little rhyme to help them remember how to round: "Underline the digit. Look next door. If it's 5 or higher, add one more. If it's 4 or less, just ignore." In the past this rhyme has been very helpful, so try using it with your child at home, too! There will be math homework each night this week. We will continue working on multiplication facts and counting multiples of 7. Last week Rylea, Kaydence, Elyse, Andy, Pierce, Robbie, and Tessa passed all of their multiplication facts. Congratulations! Other students should have sets of colored flashcards to practice at home each night. These flashcards should be returned daily to practice in class, too. Encourage your child to practice the corresponding counting songs so they can quickly count up to figure out any difficult multiplication facts.
Science -- This week we will read Lesson 5 on making and using models. Then we will learn a little bit about bridge design, using that knowledge to design a model of a bridge using straws. We will test our bridges for strength, too. There will be a homework assignment on Monday. We are wrapping up Unit 1 and looking ahead to a test as early as September 30. You can help your child begin reviewing by doing the Practice Test in our textbook at the end of the unit.
Word Work -- We are on List #7 this week on Contractions. This list has 20 contractions, so we will not have any core words on the test, except for those that students have missed in previous weeks. The students need to learn the contraction and the two words it stands for. When your child is practicing, be sure the apostrophe is placed correctly. A fun way to practice apostrophes is to use macaroni pasta for apostrophes when writing the words.
This Week's Words: don't, won't, wouldn't, there's, we're, you're doesn't, I've, here's, wasn't, shouldn't, couldn't, where's, hadn't, aren't, they're, it's, we've, when's, haven't
Reading -- Our story this week is "Gluskabe and the Snow Bird" from the purple book. This week's story is another a myth because it explains how something in nature came to be. Be sure to ask your child exactly what this myth explains. We will also read another version of this story called "How Glooskap Found Summer." Then we will compare/contrast these two versions of the story and present it as "readers' theater" for the other 4th grade classes. This week's skills are cause/effect and sequence of events. There will be comprehension/vocabulary homework on Tuesday and a story quiz on Thursday.
Language -- We are having technical difficulties getting our "Highlight of My Summer" writing to print in the computer lab. But we will keep trying so that we can add a special touch to these essays once they are printed! This week we will begin writing a myth, too. Your child will need to think of something to explain in nature and then come up with a creative story to explain it. We will also study articles (a, an, the) this week.
Social Studies -- This week we will read Unit 1, Lesson 3 on the climate and wildlife of Indiana. Ask your child to explain why we have day/night, the seasons, and a temperate climate here. We will learn all of that this week! There will be homework on either Wednesday or Thursday this week.
