Dear Falcon Middle School Family,
Colorado’s plan to conduct mandatory state assessments has become political, resulting in significant changes and new directives for districts and schools. In response to appeals to cancel all CMAS assessments from the District 49 Board of Education as well as a chorus of other district boards and educators across Colorado, the Colorado legislature and governor have approved compromise legislation to cancel the social studies assessment.
The legislation also directs the Colorado Department of Education to apply for a federal waiver to administer subject tests to every other grade level. If approved, that waiver means the science assessments would be canceled this year and the plan for testing in 2021 would be:
- 3rd Grade: English Language Arts (ELA)
- 4th Grade: Mathematics (Math)
- 5th Grade: English Language Arts
- 6th Grade: Mathematics
- 7th Grade: English Language Arts
- 8th Grade: Mathematics
Although there is no guarantee the federal department of education will approve the alternating-year waiver, we are moving forward to gather parent preference in case that waiver is approved. Although D49 already completed a process to register for CMAS testing, changes in federal and state directives require us to re-verify parental intent. To make sure we honor your parental right to participate or not, please indicate your preference through the form link below:
❏ I excuse my child from all CMAS testing for the spring of 2021. (My child will attend school on the designated testing dates but will not participate in the assessments this year.)
❏ My child will participate in all planned CMAS testing for the spring of 2021 (This could include ELA, Math, or Science depending on grade level and the status of the federal waiver.)
❏ If the federal waiver is approved, my child will participate in the subject test specified for their grade level, and I request that my child also take the other subject test.
Each school has their own specified testing dates, but in general, state testing starts April 6th and continues into early May.
