December 2019
Even the strongest blizzards start with a single snowflake!
After reading the aforementioned quote, go and do some good this winter. Be the snowflake that brings the storm! Kindness matters!
Thank you all for attending Parent/Teacher Conferences. We hope that you found this time with your child(ren)'s teacher to be beneficial. Though conference time has officially come and gone, we hope that the communication between you and our teachers continues. Please feel free to contact your child(ren)'s teacher if and when the need arises.
All schools in Kirby School District 140 are drop off locations for The "Remembering Cathy and Alison 16th Annual Toy Drive". You can drop off until December 19th. Please see the flyer below for further information.
Thank you!
District News
Parenting the Digital Generation - Monday, December 9th at 6:30 pm at Prairie View Middle School. This is a parents-only presentation on Digital Parenting, Internet Safety, Social Media, popular apps, and online trends. Please join us.
With the weather turning colder, I would like to take this opportunity to review our school closure notification process. If Kirby School District 140 needs to close schools due to inclement weather, families will receive notification from SchoolMessenger, our electronic messaging system, and an alert will be posted on our District/School websites. KSD 140 also communicates school closure information through Facebook, Twitter, and the Emergency Closing Center (ECC).
School Environment Matters: D140 Administers 2019 Illinois 5Essentials Survey to Improve Student Learning
Share your thoughts to help improve our schools! Please take the 2019 Illinois 5Essentials survey
D140 students, teachers, and parents will be given the opportunity to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions by taking the 2019 Illinois 5Essentials survey.
This survey assesses a school’s culture and climate and provides insight into strengths and weaknesses on the five key factors that research shows are predictive of school success: Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families, Supportive Environment, and Ambitious Instruction. School and district leaders use their 5Essentials data to better inform their school improvement plans and help identify key strengths and areas for growth.
We guarantee that survey responses will never be connected to the identity of you or your child. School reports will only present aggregated information of how parents and students responded as a whole.
Survey results will also be reported publicly on the 5Essentials reporting site in Spring 2020 and on the State School Report Card website in Fall 2020.
REMINDER- Please dress your children accordingly as we still go out for recess based on the District Temperature guidelines.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
You will notice a new sign out front as you drop off your child(ren) in the morning. This will help as some parents were driving to the North door only to realize the staff on duty had already closed the doors. The sign will be turned at 7:58 AM to give you time to park and walk your child in.
Please find this as a reminder that the school day officially begins at 7:55 AM.
Keep in Touch!
I encourage you to visit ksd140.org throughout the school year for key events and information pertaining to our school and the District. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you need assistance. My door is always open.
Respectfully,
Mr. Dan Callaghan
Principal
