Lakeshore Library Learners
February 2020 - Parent Edition
Read Across America Week
Read Across America Week is coming next month! The program has moved away from a focus on Dr. Seuss, we will still recognize his birthday and books, and has renamed the event "Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers".
I am very excited about this and would LOVE to do this by inviting you to consider coming in one day during the week of March 2 - 6 to read aloud to a grade level or a couple of classrooms from a grade level. I would love to have a group of readers from diverse ethnic and career backgrounds to show our students that everyone is a reader!
If you are interested or you know a community or business leader who would be interested, please take a moment to fill out the form below so we can begin preparing.
Thank you so much for your support!
Reading Rocktars
We need more photos of students reading to have a Reader's Spotlight in the library! If you catch your child reading snap a photo and email it to me at mloflin@iss.k12.nc.us and I will print it and put it in the Reader Spotlight window behind the circulation desk. You can also send in photos if you would prefer.
STEM Day in the Library
We had so much fun in the library on our February Early Release STEM day! This day happened to fall on World Read Aloud day which made for a "STEMeracy" day in the library. We read the book More-igami, which focused on practice and patience as the main character learned how to master origami. After reading students had a variety of options to choose from for their attempt at origami. It was fantastic to see them get excited and not give up at their attempt to create. According to the University of Arkansas, origami skills benefits life skills such as: math concepts (geometry and fractions), spatial visualization skills, problem solving skills, and more.
Because of this, I am choosing to make origami our Maker of the Month for February. I am excited to see our students challenge themselves to create.
