SVMS Spring Update
The Post Where We Thank the Families
Whew. What a ride.
If you would have told me a couple of months ago that I would be trying to help teach my kids while working full time and trying to help my kiddos understand what social distancing was and why it was so important I would not have believed you.
Not at all.
But here we are. And there you all. All at home, with ALL the zooming, and the Google meets, the Google classrooms, trying to juggle all the emails from the kiddos in your home (some of them in multiple schools) and hoping that your wifi can handle all this activity while you are trying to do YOUR thing, too.
We see you. We are with you. You are doing a pretty great job even if some days it doesn't feel like it. Even if some days you have to email the math teacher because you are trying to help your Eagle with a problem and you end up with a fraction where it shouldn't be. Or you suddenly find yourself helping out with a foreign language that you have never in your life have spoken yourself. Even if art, or music, or trombone playing has never really been something you have done well, but you are giving it a go for the sake of your Eagle.
This is for sure unseen territory for us all and we appreciate our Eagle families who have decided to say, We can do hard things. And we do them for our Eagles.
If someone hasn't told you today (because sometimes we forget to remind people how truly amazing you are when you make it look so easy) you are doing an outstanding job. We greatly appreciate each and every SVMS family who has gone the distance to help support virtual learning in these crazy times.
And if you feel you aren't doing super (raised hand here, I really don't know how I got that fraction) know that SVMS is there for you. Email that teacher if you need to. Let them know if you are struggling, or if you can't tell if your Eagle is struggling, or really any time you need help for any reason.
If you ever need a hand with something and you don't know where to start, or need anything at all please always know that you can email us as well. Email at svmsptsaeagles@gmail.com and we will help you out or at the very least tell you how fabulous you are doing!
SVMS truly does have the best families in LPS. I'm super proud to be one of them!

Got Lunch planned? LPS has you covered.
LPS nutrition services has been providing complimentary meals for all LPS students under the age of 18 during the extended school closure.
Beginning Monday, April 27th, they will begin offering two additional sites to receive the meals. Currently you can pick up a meal at Liberty Oaks, and Ridgeview Elementary. Starting Monday they will also have meals available at Alexander Doniphan and Warren Hills Elementary.
Click here to see times for the sites: https://www.lps53.org/Page/7975
Meals are given out in a drive up fashion. Please follow the line around and let the staff know how many meals you will be asking for for your students. All students under 18 qualify.
Try Let's Talk on the LPS website if you have questions during the extended school closure.
Since making the announcement school closures through the remainder of the school year, families have had many questions.
LPS will be regularly posting a series of LPS Mailbag posts on their Facebook page that address many of the common questions they have received.
These questions/topics were identified as common questions asked either in our recent survey or our Let's Talk community engagement portal. They will be updating this list as we move along. In addition, the Let's Talk portal is available on our district website. Click here: https://www.lps53.org/
This is how we do Teacher Appreciation in Quarantine-SVMS Teacher Appreciation Day May 15th
Or moving the date to later in the year. But what I have learned in the last couple months is that if there is one thing that is unpredictable, Covid is it. Who knows if we'll be moved back, again? And will we really be comfortable being among that many different people at this point? Better to just pick a date and go with it.
One amazing parent had an idea that will hopefully lift their spirits, while maintaining ALL the distance. This is a big idea that will literally take as many SVMS Eagles as possible.
A virtual parade-of faces and thankfulness.
Hear me out. What we would really, really appreciate from you is a picture or video of your SVMS Eagle saying thank you. To a teacher. To a staff member. Just in general, whatever you are comfortable sharing.
You can email pictures and videos to svmsptsaeagles@gmail.com or you can tweet them out on twitter. If you tweet them please be sure to add @ptsasvms and @SVMSEagles with hashtag #SVMSBEST so we can find you.
Don't have a sign handy that you can use, but want a cute one? Print one of these out: https://www.ishouldbemoppingthefloor.com/2018/04/staff-principal-gifts.html?showComment=1522776635675 or this one https://pinkpeppermintdesign.com/im-soda-lighted-free-printable or even this one https://www.smilingcolors.com/2019/04/thank-you-teacher/
It doesn't need to be fancy (although we see you on all the social media, Eagles know how to do fancy) we just wanted a conceivable way to say thanks from a distance. If you could get them to us by May 11th that would be amazing!
Thanks for helping us out with this, Eagles. We truly do have the best families!
Meet Your New PTSA Crew
It's been fun being your PTSA President for the last six years. I don't know what I will do without one kiddo waking up before the crack of dawn to get to school and it might take my vehicle a bit to not immediately make the trek to SVMS at 2:00, but I am leaving you with some of the best that SVMS has to offer!
VP of Communication, Lauren Hickey: This is Lauren's second time at SVMS. She has a journalism background and has the best book recommendations. She will be in charge of communications.
VP of Membership, Kate Roarke: Yes, that Kate Roark. Kate has a current seventh grader at SVMS. She is a master organizer, produces some great spirit wear, and loves all things art.
Secretary, Amy Reames: Amy has been the SVMS PTSA secretary twice now. She's so good at it that we just keep roping her in! She has a current sixth grader at SVMS and is the first to help out and the last to leave. She is also studying to become a personal trainer, because, you know there's a lot of things to lift in the PTSA!
Treasurer, Allison Rickels: Allison is a number cruncher, a Chiefs lover and is going to do all the things to keep our accounts straight and our spending right on track. This is the first year to be on the SVMS executive committee, but she comes with a ton of experience and some really great ideas!
This is a great crew, Eagles. They will lead you well!
PTSA Events for the rest of 2020
The PTSA will try to have one last, in person, meeting when we can meet again to reallocate funds and approve a 2020/2021 budget, but there will be no actual events for students for the remainder of the school year.
We appreciate all the support that the families have given us this year and will communicate the new date of the PTSA meeting at least 7 days in advance by email and by facebook post in case you want to attend.
