Welcome to AMHS
2022-2023 School Year!
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome Back to the 2022-2023 school year! I hope that you have had the opportunity to take some time to relax and enjoy your summer vacation. I am excited to welcome you back to the building for face-to-face instruction beginning Monday, August 8, 2022. This year the AMHS faculty and staff plan to continue to cultivate a spirit of excellence among our students and engage them in deep teaching and learning that will improve student performance and positively impact their personal development.
This year’s theme is “Unmasking Your Superpowers.” For the AMHS student, this means helping them to recognize their unique qualities and gifts, cultivating a learning space that allows them to use each gift to enhance their academic performance, and empowering them to blossom and become more dynamic with a stronger sense of purpose.
Our goal is to provide opportunities for our students to use their unique qualities and gifts in academics, athletics, as well as clubs and organizations in order to become positive, contributing members of our school community and globally.
We commit to preparing our scholars for the challenges that they will meet as they matriculate through high school and instill in them the belief that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. We want to ensure that we provide our students with the skills necessary that will allow them to achieve success in all areas of their lives and to compete globally once they graduate!!!
Again, welcome back and we look forward to a wonderful 2022-2023 school year!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Tanya Mason | Princial
Important School Information
Instruction
Arabia Mountain High School operates on a traditional 7-period schedule. All classes, with the exception of mathematics courses, are taught at the accelerated level. Therefore, it is imperative that our students develop strong time management and study skills. Students should engage in daily study outside of the time spent on homework to avoid cramming for summative assessments.

Attendance
As we begin our school year, we must remember that daily attendance will be an integral part of your child's success at AMHS. Students are expected to attend all live class sessions (either synchronously or asynchronously) to ensure that they receive explicit/direct instruction.
Upon returning to the traditional setting, our school hours are from 8:00 am-3:20 pm. We ask parents to drop off their students no earlier than 7:05 am. Students will need to enter the building at the gym entrance. All students should be at school no later than 7:45 am to ensure that they get to class on time. Students arriving after 8:00 am will need to report to the attendance office to receive a tardy pass. If a student reports after 8:15 am, a parent will need to check their child in at the attendance office.
Students must provide a note from a parent or a physician to the attendance office if they are absent from school. Please send all attendance notes to Ms. Rosalind Young, our attendance secretary, at Rosalind_Young@dekalbschoolsga.org, and Mrs. Rheanolia Wynn, our Assistant Principal of attendance at Rheanolia_Wynn@dekalbschoolsga.org.
Dress Code
Due to the delay in the shipping of uniform items, students will begin wearing their AMHS blazers on Monday, September 12th.
Students enrolled in physical education courses will be required to wear an AMHS P.E. uniform. P.E. uniforms can be purchased through the AMHS Health & P.E. Department.
Discipline
Arabia Mountain functions as a safe and orderly environment. We have high academic and behavior expectations for our students; therefore, they are held accountable for their actions and choices. Our administrative staff and our faculty are committed to proactively resolving issues to ensure that your child receives the best education we have to offer.
Discipline infractions can occur both in virtual and face-to-face settings. Please encourage your child to adhere to the DCSD Code of Conduct and make good daily decisions.
Transportation
Parents are responsible for their student's transportation to and from school. Students can be dropped off at school or can ride one of five shuttles to school. The five shuttle locations are
1) Cedar Grove High School
2) Lithonia High School
3) Martin Luther King, Jr. High School
4) Memorial Drive
5) Stephenson High School
Upperclassmen are allowed to drive to school. Students who drive to school must purchase a parking decal to park on campus. The student parking lot will be located on the gym side of the building. (Click here for the 22-23 Satellite Bus Schedule).
Schedule Change
Students, do you need to request a schedule change with the Counseling Department? Please complete and submit the schedule change request form ONLY if you believe there is an error in your scheduled classes. Schedule changes based on teacher or period preference will not be honored. Schedule change requests must be submitted within the first week of the semester in order to be considered.
COVID 19 Health & Safety
The safety of all students and staff remains our highest priority in the DeKalb County School District. The COVID Task Force continues to monitor the data published by the Department of Public Health (DPH) to guide decisions made related to COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the COVID-19 Community Levels tool helps communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels are classified as low, medium, or high and are determined by evaluating specific indicators.
Currently in DeKalb County, the community level is HIGH. The CDC’s recommendations for this category include the following:
- Wear a mask indoors in public spaces
- Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines
- Get tested if you have symptoms
- Additional precautions may be needed for people at high risk for severe illness
Based on recent data, a “HIGH” community level, and collaboration with our Medical Advisory Committee, the DeKalb County School District is STRONGLY ENCOURAGING all employees and visitors to wear masks indoors including all school district buildings, centers, facilities, and school buses or other approved modes of transportation. Masks are not required outdoors. DCSD will have masks available if needed.
Per Senate Bill 514, mask-wearing is optional for students in all DCSD buildings, facilities, and school buses or other approved modes of transportation.
If there are questions, please contact Lead Nurse Coordinator, Joann Harris, via email at joann_harris@dekalbschoolsga.org.
