CCCS Ready Schools Design Team
The next step is for the Ready Schools Design Team to gather new and innovative ideas to bring back to Crawford County. This team will be visiting schools around Indiana to gather new ideas! They will bring these ideas back and use the parent, student and staff interviews to help find solutions that fit the needs of Crawford County Schools the best.
IREAD-3 Assessments - Grade 2 & 3
South Crawford Elementary will be administering the IREAD-3 Assessment to 2nd and 3rd grade students beginning March 4, 2024. We have been laser focused on supporting each student's reading skills this year through the IN Literacy Cadre. Please reach out to your child's teacher or Mrs. Etienne if you have questions about the assessment.
When is the IREAD-3 assessment held?
The spring IREAD-3 assessment window is held annually in March. The summer retest opportunity is held each summer beginning in May. This year the testing window opens on March 4, 2024.
What is the test design for IREAD-3?
IREAD-3 is an online, timed, multiple-choice only assessment consisting of three separate test segments. The first segment measures foundational reading skills, including phonics and vocabulary. The remaining two segments assess students’ ability to silently read and comprehend nonfiction and literary texts. Indiana educator committees collaborated with content experts to create the IREAD-3 Test Blueprint and Item Specifications and ensure all test items align to Indiana Academic Standards. The Test Delivery System (TDS) will automatically generate unique forms for each student with different items measuring the same level or rigor.
Who participates in IREAD-3?
IREAD-3 is required for all grade three students. Students are required to retest if they do not pass unless they are granted a Good Cause Exemption. Beginning in the spring of 2022, IDOE created an opportunity for schools to opt in to administer IREAD-3 to grade two students as well. Schools that opt in must administer the assessment to all grade two students.
How will students receive scores?
Scores will become available to relevant users through the Cambium Assessment, Inc. (CAI) Centralized Reporting System (CRS). Schools are responsible for providing results to students and families locally using the Individual Student Report (ISR).
Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education, released a news article outlining the reading crisis in the state of Indiana. She focused on the idea of retaining students who do not pass the IREAD-3 test in the spring or summer of their 3rd grade year.

Social-Emotional Learning and Bullying Prevention Program
New This Year: Second Step Social-Emotional Program
Things you will notice:
- Students learning skills for getting along with others and doing well in school
- Safer schools
- Respectful places where everyone can learn
To further help our school be a safe and respectful place, we are also going to use the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. This unit is available through Purdue University and MESA.
For bullying prevention to work, everyone at school needs to be involved. All of our staff have received special training in how to:
- Recognize and respond to bullying
- Support children who have been bullied
- Correct behaviors of children who are bullying
- Use strategies that support a positive school and classroom climate
Get involved in making our school a safe and respectful place by letting us know if you hear about bullying at our school. Make sure your child knows to tell you or someone at school if he or she is being bullied. Give your child the clear message that it is never ok to bully others.
You can access the Second Step materials by joining SecondStep.org with the Activation Key that was sent home. If you need the access code, please feel free to email kpresley@cccs.k12.in.us.

Wolfpack Den Program
Building lasting relationships!
South Crawford Elementary is excited to announce a new school-wide initiative that will help us build supports, create a sense of belonging, and increase school pride. SCES will be following the school within a school model of creating school “families” with cross age peer groups. Our school will have eight “dens” where about 20 kids will be paired with a few adults from throughout the building. The dens will meet regularly and have a short activity to build connections and learn about our school-wide character curriculum. You can see evidence of den activities in our hallways. Please ask your child about his/her den and den activities throughout the year!
