Feeling Stressed?
Here are some reminders and ideas on managing the stress:
1. Visualizations: Using guided imagery to reduce stress can be very effective. Visualizations can help you calm down, detach from what’s stressing you, and turn off your body’s stress response. You can also use visualizations to prepare for presentations and score higher on tests by vividly seeing yourself performing just as you’d like to.
2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Another great stress reliever that can be used during tests, before bed, or at other times when stress has you physically wound up is progressive muscle relaxation (PMR). This technique involves tensing and relaxing all muscles until the body is completely relaxed.
3. Calming Breaths: When your body is experiencing a stress response, you’re often not thinking as clearly as you could be. A quick way to calm down is to practice breathing exercises. These can be done virtually anywhere to relieve stress in minutes, and are especially effective for reducing anxiety before or even during tests, as well as during other times when stress feels overwhelming. Evaporate Stress Fast With Breathing Exercises
And, remember, you can always stop by my office if you want to talk or need help identifying which strategies might be the best fit for you!

Juniors
Join our Class of 2022 Google Classroom Page!
We'll use this class page this spring in preparation of college applications and throughout your senior year.
Leadership and Additional Experience!
- Hoosier Girls State is still accepting applications until Spring Break. See Mrs. Gerber or Mrs. Losey for an application. Event will be virtual the first week of June.
- US Naval Academy: VIrtual Summer Seminar (https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Programs/NASS.php) is for current 11th graders. Application due by March 31st.
- Youth Philanthropy Council with the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana is also accepting applications. See below for application. Due end of April. A nomination form and timeline were also directly emailed to students and is available in the counseling office.
Planning ahead....
Spring is a great time to start scouting potential colleges to apply for in the fall (beginning in August of 2021). PHS offers juniors one excused day in the spring of the junior year to visit a college campus. The form for the college visits are in the front office and must be completed in advance. Another perk for visiting college campuses is that some colleges offer scholarships to students just for visiting and checking them out! Also, seniors, some of you are weighing a couple of colleges and an additional visit to a campus may help swing your decision.
College Visit Tips: https://www.princetonreview.com/college-advice/college-visits
Juniors: The Common Application
2021-2022 Common Application Essay Prompts
- Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
- Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
SAT/ACT Exam Opportunities
There are still a couple of exam dates for the SAT and the ACT exams this spring. It's ideal for juniors to take these exams in preparation for senior year and applying to college. Some colleges have waived the test requirement completely. Others require it for scholarships, and others are still preferring to have a score. If it's possible to take the test this spring, it would leave options open for you.
Parents often have questions about how they can help prepare students for the SAT or ACT exams. Below is a link to a parent tip sheet.
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/official-sat-practice-parent-flyer.pdf
Some recommendations for preparing include: doing well in current high school courses, studying for the exam a couple days a week, taking the exam more than one time with preparation in between, taking a practice full length test, and reading a variety of texts. Junior students have taken the PSAT at least one time and can use their individual results through the free Khan Academy to practice the skills needed to improve.
If possible, Juniors should register to take the SAT and/or the ACT this spring.
SAT: To study for the upcoming exams, the College Board recommends the free online Khan Academy course. https://www.khanacademy.org/sat
For more information about registering, studying, and interpreting scores:
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat?affiliateId=cbhomeexp&bannerId=sat
ACT: Students may pick up a paper copy of the ACT study guide at any time from the counseling department. To register for upcoming test dates, or to order the online study course please visit the website: www.act.org
Seniors and Financial Aid:
Feeling stressed about paying for college?
Be sure to complete the FAFSA by April 15 to be eligible for financial aid. It takes about 20 minutes and is free!
"The FAFSA is the application that is required to be used by all schools in awarding federal student aid," says Brad Barnett, financial aid director at James Madison University in Virginia. "So if you want federal loans, federal grants, federal work-study, you have to do the FAFSA."
Nearly all students who apply qualify for some form of federal financial aid. "It's very easy to qualify for aid based on the FAFSA," Barnett says. (www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/completing-the-fafsa)
By not filling out FAFSA, American college students are missing out on a seriously good deal. Federal grants do not need to be repaid, federal student loans have low interest rates and work-study programs can be a convenient way to simultaneously fund an education and build a resume. (www.cnbc.com/2017/09/28/why-every-student-should-fill-out-the-fafsa.html)
FAFSA - Due by April 15th, 2021 for Indiana residents
As a reminder, every senior should complete the FAFSA and each following year of undergrad/graduate school. The majority of PHS seniors have already completed the FAFSA.
