Our Mission is Possible...with Teamwork!
- Dr. Paul Nehrig - Principal
- Mr. David Sanford - Assistant Principal
It’s hard to believe, but we’re at the end of the 3rd grading period with only one more remaining this year! Congratulations to our students, teachers, support staff and families for a job well done! I want to wish everyone a happy, safe, and restful Spring Break. Take time to have fun with family and friends, preparing yourselves for a strong finish in the 4th grading period.
We need your input!
Good news! The deadline to complete the annual Climate Survey has been extended to March 31st. If you haven’t participated in the survey yet, you still have time! This anonymous, web-based survey provides us with valuable information as we develop our school improvement plans. Assistance is available if you need access to a computer – just contact us at the main office. You can access the survey through the following link:

Thank you for your input!
Safety first!
Now is a good time to remind everyone about important safety tips. Keeping our students safe is a top priority. Please remember that everyone who drives onto our campus must observe the posted speed limits, stay off cell phones or other electronic devices, and load or unload students from the curb side of the vehicle only. With the time change scheduled for Sunday, March 11th (‘Spring Forward’ 1 hour), it will be darker in the morning when students are waiting at the bus stop or when they walk or bike to school. Please watch for pedestrians and help remind our students to observe traffic rules, travel in groups, and wear reflective or light-colored clothing. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you!
Do your best on the test!
When we return from Spring Break, students will be taking very important assessments. As we head into testing season, our teachers are focused on helping students achieve at their highest levels. Please help our 3rd – 5th grade students be ready for the FSA by ensuring they attend every day, complete all assignments, read daily, maintain regular bedtimes and wake-up times, and eat a healthy diet. Encourage your student with positive messages that they will do a great job on the tests if they do their best.
Thank you and have a great Spring Break!
Sincerely,
Dr. Nehrig

KINDERGARTEN
Where has the time flown to!? It's March and our babies are all grown up. Enjoy your upcoming spring break with your child. Remember to read daily.
We will be visiting the Central Florida Zoo on March 30th. We are looking forward learning about all the animals we will see!
FIRST GRADE
March is a busy month for first grade. We are now at day 120 of 180 school days! Your child is more than half way through first grade and that much closer to becoming a second grader! We still have lots of work to do to ensure that your child is ready. Please continue to read daily and work diligently on mastering sight words as well as math facts. If your child already knows their sight words, challenge them to learn how to spell them. Reading daily with your child is extremely important and contributes greatly to improved fluency. Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Improved fluency, in turn, contributes greatly to improved comprehension. Homework is due on Fridays. Please check for corrections, and neatness before your child turns it in.
SECOND GRADE
Second grade had the most interesting and elaborate Book-IT projects on Black History and art US presidents. Congratulations on a job well done.
The young engineers built make shift catapults in Science and launched Valentine heart candies. They not only had fun, they worked together in teams and learned so much about force and motion. We are wishing everyone a happy, restful, and fun, spring break. Last day of school for students is March 8. Be safe!
THIRD GRADE
We are winding down a non-stop 3rd semester and gearing up for our final lap of the school year. We have been reviewing fundamentals in math and reading; as well as practicing rigor and endurance that is much needed on next month's FSA testing. 3rd grade students will take the FSA the 2nd and 3rd weeks of April, more information will be sent out as it gets closer to those dates. We are confident and proud of their progress. For reading,Challenge your child to progressively read harder books at whatever level they read it EVERY NIGHT!!!! For math, continue to practice to master the basics with multiplication and division. If your child has that down others concepts like fractions, area/perimeter and multi-step word problems will come a lot quicker.
As always thank you for everything you do :)
FOURTH GRADE
Fourth grade is working hard in preparation for upcoming FSA tests. March 5 was FSA writing! We just finished a math intervention boot camp where teachers rotated classrooms to teach difficult math standards! We will have FSA math and reading at the end of April. Please have students practicing reading and math skills over Spring break! We are now collecting permission slips and money for our upcoming field trip to St. Augustine on May 10!
FIFTH GRADE
Mission: Build, race and find the fastest Derby Car in 5th Grade has been accomplished. Thank you parents for all your hard work when working with your child on their Derby Car. Your collaborative effort really helped to push our students towards success. We had a blast learning about things like friction, speed, gravity, and shape. We learned that all these factors help to control our cars and that this knowledge can be applied to real cars! Our first place winner won a $10 gift card to Walmart, our second place winner won a free $5 dollar Kona Ice, and finally our third place winner won a free $3 Kona Ice. This month in 5th grade, we have had a blast learning about Force and Motion, Decimals, Plot, Context Clues, Pioneer Settlements, and Informational Writing!
We’re moving on to even more exciting things like the Human Body, 2-D shapes, Main Idea, and more. Please be aware that as we move through this last quarter we will also be completing FSA’s to help best prepare your student please make sure they get a full night of rest before the test, a good breakfast, and “We were born ready!” attitude. We are confident that they will do well and cannot wait to celebrate at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on May 3rd. Remember all monies are due on April 27th. Late monies will not be accepted we are ordering tickets that afternoon. Thank you again for all your continued support!
SPECIAL AREA NEWS

Our fitness festival team will be competing in the Deltona area fitness festival held here at Forest Lake on Friday, March 9th from 8:00 – 12:00.
Coach Boyle’s PE class:
From March 6th to March 21st the students will be getting tested on their soccer skills. You can look on the PE website www.flepe.weebly.com to view the soccer rubric.
After the soccer test will be have 2 rotations of bicycle/pedestrian safety. Grades 2-5 will be riding bicycles on the PE court. Students must wear a helmet to be able to ride. Students are encouraged to bring their own helmets from home, I do have a few community helmets that the students can borrow if they don’t have one. Students are also allowed to bring in their own bicycles and park them by the wall at the PE court. K and 1st grades will be walking the course and practicing pedestrian safety rules. K and 1 do not need to bring in a helmet.
Coach Albano’s PE class:
The classes will be playing field type games in the PE field for the month of March.
Coach Rose’s PE class:
The classes will be inside learning about proper nutrition and making good food choices for the month of March.
ART
The primary grades have been working on process based art, including abstract art. The intermediate grades are completing their Panamanian molas. The next unit we will be working on is developing a character and making a puppet. The kids will be able to spark their script making ideas using their own characters. Have a safe and happy spring break!
STEM
A lot of exciting things have been happening in the STEM Lab. This nine weeks students have explored variables as they related to scientific processes like the scientific method. We also investigated animal adaptations in a quest to determine which is better, beaks or bills. Another project in the STEM lab has been pencil towers, where students worked through the engineering design process and used their best team work skills to build a tower out of pencils; all without verbal communication. The second Gross-ology lab, which students earn for having outstanding behavior in the STEM Lab, has groups exploring chemical reactions with “elephant toothpaste.” We are learning a lot in STEM this year.
MEDIA CENTER NEWS
Our 3rd - 5th grade readers are getting excited about the upcoming SSYRA voting party. If your child has not read the minimum 3 out of the 15 SSYRA books on the 2017-2018 list, it's not too late. The SSYRA voting party is scheduled for April 13th. If you have a third, fourth, or fifth grader, encourage them to stop by the media center before spring break and pick up a book off the SSYRA shelf.
Our next Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for May 4th - 11th. You are not going to want to miss this book fair. It is our BOGO fair. EVERYTHING is buy-one-get-one-free!
