August Newsletter 2020
Memorial Middle School
Note from the Principal
Memorial Middle School Parents,
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year. We are excited to welcome students back to the building. As we plan for the beginning of this school year, our focus will remain upon our Memorial Middle School Mission, The Learning Place: Learning for a lifetime, Learning to like yourself, Learning to live with others, and Learning to serve. Our goals for the Memorial students are to be learning both academically and socially as well as engaging in school life. I encourage everyone to approach the new school year looking for ways to engage in the learning experiences of the middle school years.
The Memorial custodians have completed deep cleaning this summer, and staff are focused upon the health and safety of our students. Please note that the Sioux Falls School District (SFSD) has released the Return to Learn plan located on the SFSD website, http://www.sf.k12.sd.us/, under COVID-19 Resource Center. The SFSD has also released a Parent Handbook for the Return to Learn plan. Here is the link: http://www.sf.k12.sd.us/images/docs/COVID/Parent_Handbook.pdf
Please know that a Memorial Team will develop protocols for our students that are specific to Memorial and that align with the SFSD Return to Learn plan.
The format of the Memorial Mustang Roundup or Parent Student Teacher Session on Monday, August 24th has changed for the health and safety of students, parents, and staff. The Memorial Mustang Roundup on Monday, August 24th from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. will be held in the building for 6th grade students and one parent per student. The Memorial Mustang Roundup for 7th and 8th grade students and parents will be held virtually. In the coming weeks, we will be sending 7th and 8th grade parents information regarding the virtual sessions. Please read the section below for details regarding the Memorial Mustang Roundup or Parent Student Teacher Sessions.
I thank parents for completing the SFSD Annual Student Information Update (online registration) for each of your children. I ask all parents to have the SFSD Annual Student Information updated by August 21st. The following links will help you with the process:

Memorial Mustang Roundup: Monday, August 24th
We are excited to welcome our 6th graders into the building for our Memorial Mustang Roundup. The Memorial Mustang Roundup is an opportunity for you to give us information, to meet the teachers, and to hear about your child’s classes all in one day. Please make plans to complete the SFSD Annual Online Registration* process. If the Annual Online Registration is done before August 24th, your time at the Memorial Mustang Roundup will be expedited. After checking in and ensuring the Annual Online Registration is complete/submitted, your child will receive his/her schedule, and you will be directed to the team’s informational session.
During your time at our Mustang Roundup, 6th grade students will have their picture taken, get busing information, put money in lunch accounts, and you have the opportunity to join our Mustang Club. Current 7th and 8th graders will be able to complete these items after school starts on August 27th. Please note that 7th graders will be taking school pictures on Monday, August 31st and 8th graders will be taking pictures on Wednesday, September 9th during the school day. They will also be able to access their schedules after 5:00 pm on Monday, August 24th.
While the Memorial Mustang Roundup is an open house format, the team sessions are specifically scheduled times. During these sessions, you will meet your child’s teachers and find out about the classes that s/he will be taking this year, as well as learn about your child’s team.
Please know that the SFSD is taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our students, families, and staff. The following schedule is set up to allow for the Memorial Community to practice CDC guidelines of social distancing and healthy hygiene practices, and ensure precautions are in place. The precautions are firmly rooted in guidance from local and state public health officials, support from infectious disease doctors from Avera and Sanford, and the CDC. Those precautions are:
· Families will use one entrance to enter the building and use another entrance to exit the building. Families should enter the building using Door P (West Main Door Entrance). Families can use any of the remaining doors/exits to exit the building.
· Hand sanitation dispensers will be available throughout the building and classrooms.
· Staff, students, and guardians are expected to use cloth face coverings. Cloth face coverings are meant to protect other people in case the wearer is unknowingly infected. Cloth face coverings are not surgical masks, respirators, or personal protective equipment.
· Please limit participation at the events to the student and ONE parent/guardian.
· When the student and parent/guardian are in the team sessions they will practice social distancing in chairs facing forward.
While we know that parking will be an issue, we encourage you to consider walking or biking if you are close enough to Memorial. If you are not able to attend during your scheduled time, please plan on attending during the other scheduled time.

First 2 Days of School Schedule
The first two days, Thursday, August 27th and Friday, August 28th, Memorial Middle School will be using an A/B schedule along with all grade levels in the Sioux Falls School District. This schedule is being used for these two days to reduce the number of students in each school by 50% to better allow teachers to review health and safety expectations, practices, and protocols for the 20-21 school year. Team A will attend Thursday, August 27th and Team B will attend school on Friday, August 28th.
- Students on Team A rotation: Last name starts with A-K
- Students on Team B rotation: Last name starts with L-Z
Teachers will teach the same lessons with students on both days and there will be no expectation of remote learning for the 50% of students not in attendance. The A/B schedule is only being planned for the first two days, on Monday, August 31st, all students will be back to a traditional school schedule.
