16th Century
Kazakhs emerged as a distinct group, divided into three juz (ancestor branches occupying specific territories)
Mid- 19th Century
All of Kazakhstan was part of the Russian Empire. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, then a civil war, the territory of Kazakhstan was reorganized several times.
1936
More than one million Kazakhs died of starvation and 80% of their important livestock died. Those that survived tried escape into civil-war ravaged China.
1991
Kazakhstan became independent from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991. Kazakhstan proclaimed its membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (a group that worked together on economic stuff) on Dec. 21, 1991, along with ten other former Soviet republics.
2000
In 2000, oil was discovered in Kazakhstan's border of the Caspian Sea. It is believed to be the largest oil find in 30 years.
2012
On September 24, 2012, Prime Minister Karim Massimov resigned after holding the position for five years. He resigned because the President of the country wanted to make some changes and he didn't want those changes to happen.
