A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
At Riverview, we love books and we love to read. February was I Love To Read Month and this past Saturday was "Read Across America Day" which is recognized on the birthday of Dr. Seuss each year. Our learners participated in lots of fun activities during February such as flashlight reading, comfy/cozy reading days, buddy reads, guest readers, mystery readers, and more! It has been so much fun, that we want to keep the fun going. PTP is sponsoring a Read-A-Thon this week and we invite all families to participate. It's a great way to come together as a family, continue building literacy skills, and raise money for our school. Be sure to check out the different ways to participate in the Read-A-Thon below. There are also fun dress up days like pajama day (Monday), sports day (Tuesday), hat day (Wednesday), and dress like a book character day (Thursday).
Also, this is the last call for parent/teacher conference sign ups. We look forward to seeing all Riverview families this Tuesday (March 5) and Thursday (March 7). If you haven't yet signed up for a conference, you can find the link to do so below. We appreciate your partnership and willingness to come in for a few minutes to make sure we are working together to help your child achieve their hopes and dreams.
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck

This Week's Mystery Reader Revealed!
Each day during I Love To Read Month, on our morning announcements, a clue is given about who our mystery reader is. Then on each Friday, the identity of the reader is revealed when a video is shared of that person reading a story to them. This week, we learned that our mystery reader enjoys playing games and doing puzzles at the cabin, has visited 10 different countries, loved playing with toads as a child, was a member of the Highlights dance team, and shares part of their name with 5 different family members. Who could it be??? Watch the video below to see who it is!

Students In Grades 3-5 To Participate in MCA Assessments Starting in April
The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards are the statewide expectations for student learning in public schools around the state. MCA exams are completed by students each year so schools can receive feedback on our practices and whether or not they are leading to success in meeting these standards and benchmarks. These assessments provide us with data that we can use to strengthen our instruction as we step forward toward continuous improvement. The results also provide us with a snapshot of individual student learning success. Assessments are an important part of learning, because they help us determine whether or not our ambitious goals are being met. They also inspire us to ask ourselves hard questions such as:
- Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?
- Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?
- Is there a better way to teach the material to promote deeper learning?
In short, these assessments let us know if we are on the right track so we take them seriously. We want on students to do the same so the feedback we get is as accurate as possible. So much learning has taken place this school year and we are confident that our students will perform well on their MCAs if they give it their best effort. We consistently challenge our learners to try their hardest in all they do, and we know you do the same at home. We will share more information about MCA assessments as they get closer.

Help Ensure That Learners Attend School Every Day To Achieve Academic Success!
Studies show that the impact of missing just 2 days per month of school is significant - especially in the early grades. National researchers recently asked the question "Who can read at grade level after 3rd grade?" and came to the following conclusion:
- 64% of students with good attendance in kindergarten AND 1st grade could read at grade level after their 3rd grade year.
- 43% of students who missed more than 9 days of school in kindergarten AND 1st grade could read at grade level after their 3rd grade year.
- 41% students who missed more than 18 days of school in kindergarten OR 1st grade could read at grade level after their 3rd grade year.
- 17% of students who missed more than 18 days of school in kindergarten AND 1st grade could read at grade level after their 3rd grade year.
Please do what you can to make sure your child is attending regularly. Steps you can take to make this happen are ensuring an early bedtime, encourage routine hand washing, schedule appointments outside of school hours, develop back-up transportation plans, and avoid long vacations when school is not on break. We appreciate your partnership in this important goal!
