MARCH KEY OF EXCELLENCE - FLEXIBILITY – Be willing to do things differently
Flexibility is the willingness to try something different when we realize that what we’re doing isn’t working. Many times a day we are faced with situations that are different from what we had originally planned. One way to deal with these situations is to be rigid and continue to do things in the same way over and over—another is to handle them with flexibility. Being flexible is responding to change or new situations in ways that move us forward.
Flexibility is about not getting locked into one way of doing something. If we’re trying to achieve something (like getting up on time in the morning) and it’s just not working, we try another way (like moving the alarm clock to the other side of the room so we have to get up to shut it off). Flexibility is about recognizing all kinds of habits or patterns or activities in our life that aren’t working and changing them, and even changing them again until we find the one that works!

North Dakota State Assessment
- North Dakota State Assessment (NDSA) Begins-All students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the State Assessment. We are asking for your help to make this experience a positive and successful one! We’ve been preparing at school all year for this test by learning and growing together. This test is a very serious opportunity for our students to show us what they know. Please discuss with your child the importance of doing his/her best on the NDSA, as the results are impactful on our building with the North Dakota Department of Instruction. We appreciate your assistance in making this a positive experience for everyone one. Please be on the look out from your child’s teacher about special requests during the NDSA Testing week. Here are some suggestions YOU CAN DO to help us during your child’s testing week:
- Ensure your child arrives to school on time.
- Have your child eat a healthy supper (at home) & breakfast at home (or at school).
- Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep.
- Limit their screen time at night during the testing week.
- Gently encourage them to do their best and encourage their efforts each night about how they did on the test.
Testing Dates (Testing Sessions are about 2 hours in length each day) PLEASE
WATCH FOR EXACT TIMES FROM YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER ON DOJO:

SEL Snapshot
The school counselor and Mrs. Proctor (our school social worker) are hard at work providing SEL (Social Emotional Learning) lessons in each classroom. Did you know that each classroom receives 200 minutes a month of these SEL lessons? How amazing is that!!!
Have you ever wondered what in the world we are doing in these lessons? We use lots of things to provide these lessons with the main ones being: Quaver, Second Step, Keys of Excellence, and Mind-up. We have worked hard to create a scope and sequence that follows the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) competencies (self-awareness; self-management; social awareness; relationship skills; responsible decision-making) and have also created assessments for each competency. In March we will finish up our unit of relationship skills and move into our responsible decision-making unit. Relationship skills lessons focus specifically on managing emotions and behaviors as well as working towards goals.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out!
To start the month of March, we will be finishing up our Hockey and Pillo Polo Unit with games that incorporate skills such as passing, shooting, and defense. After this unit, we will be moving into a short and long rope jump roping unit, where the students will learn different individual short rope jump roping routines as well as work together in a team with a long jump rope. To finish out the month, we will be doing different fleeing and chasing activities, hopefully outside for some of these if the weather cooperates!

March is National Reading Month & Music in our Schools!
Jefferson 2nd grade artists experimented with painting with objects other than paintbrushes for texture. 3rd and 4th grade artists worked on creating drawings based on a theme. 5th-grade artists worked with creating different values in paint as well as creating still life drawings of ring pop candies.
