Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 12, 2024
Dear Cedar Grove Families:
Our students were so excited to have the opportunity to go outside last Monday to view the solar eclipse. Many thanks to our PTA for providing the solar eclipse glasses so the children could not only see the different positions of the moon moving over the sun, but to have this special memory while attending Cedar Grove.
Also, thanks to our PTA for providing our third PTA sponsored cultural arts assembly yesterday. Enviro Drum Maryland is a 4-piece musical group consisting of three percussionists playing recycle bins, trash cans, and other household items, along with a keyboardist/vocalist. The high-energy, interactive show was a hit and emphasized the # R's of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Enviro Drum- Maryland teaches people good recycling habits through song and through scientific facts as the listeners discovered the importance and fun of recycling!
In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, we want to recognize and celebrate our students, not just in our school, but all individuals with autism as we strive to promote acceptance, celebrate differences, and work to create inclusive environments. During the week of April 15-19, students and staff are encouraged to participate in our Autism Acceptance Spirit Week and wear the items as shown in the link to show your support.
Monday, April 22, 2024, Asynchronous Learning Day- In response to the number of snow days this year, MCPS has determined that Monday, April 22 is an asynchronous learning day and will be used as a make-up instructional day for students. Asynchronous learning describes educational activities and assignments that engage students in learning without live instruction. Our students will be engaging in Reading/Math Activities as well as have the opportunity to explore choice boards. The reading and math activities can be referenced on the first slide of our April 22nd slide deck. Students will need to login to their clever account and then complete the activity assigned by your child's teacher for reading and math. On the second slide, there are April choice activities which can be explored by your child and on the third slide Grades (K-2) and fourth slide (Grades 3-5) there are coding choice boards your child can engage in at your discretion. We will review with students prior to April 22, 2024. Students will have ten school days to complete any missing work from the asynchronous day to mitigate any connectivity issues with a completion date by May 1, 2024. We will help if the student doesn't complete it by May 1th or has connectivity problems.
Take Your Child to Work Day is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 2024. If you would like your child to participate in this out-of-school activity, and you have made arrangements for him/her to job shadow, please communicate with us by either email at Noreen_k_fair@mcpsmd.org or by using this form- Report an Absence. Please notify us by April 23, 2024, for this to be considered an excused absence.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Attendance Matters: Helping You Get Your Student to School Everyday
MCPS remains committed to working closely with families to support student attendance. During the fourth quarter, MCPS will pilot attendance messages through the Remind app to help families make every effort to send their child(ren) to school every day. A message will be automatically sent when a student is absent for three, five and 10 days during the quarter. The messages are designed to be informative, culturally competent, empathetic and supportive. A student is considered chronically absent if they are absent 10 percent or more of the days they are enrolled. Remember, school staff are always available to help remove any barriers to your children’s attendance.
Career Day
Career Day is scheduled for June 5th and our students are excited! Here are some jobs they are hoping to hear about: doctor, engineer, plumber, entrepreneur/business owner, chef, vet, police officer, pet sitter, scientist, dentist and realtor! Can you or a friend or family member volunteer for this event? If so, please click the link to sign up is below. Please contact Mrs. Spoales if you have any questions.
Kindergarten Registration Information and Sign-up for Kindergarten Sneak Peek
The registration window for new kindergarten students opens this Monday, March 18 and continues through April 12, 2024. If you have a child who will be turning five on or before September 1, 2024, please contact Mrs. Noreen Fair at 240-740-6190 to register your child. You may also register online through the ParentVUE portal. If your family is new to MCPS, you will need to create a ParentVue account here. For more information about eligibility and the registration process, visit the MCPS Kindergarten Enrollment webpage or contact the school office.
In addition, please save the date of Thursday, May 9 for our Kindergarten Welcome/Sneak Peek, which replaces the traditional MCPS kindergarten orientation that previously took place during the school day. Two information sessions at 4:30-5:00 and 5:15-5:45 will be provided to families. Please use this Sign-up Genius to schedule your visit using your child's name. If you know of any friends or family members who have a rising kindergarten student, please share this information with them. Thank you.
Reminder - Chromebooks for Home Use
We know that there is the possibility that MCPS will move to virtual learning should we have additional closures due to snow. If this occurs, it is important for children to have a device from which they can access learning on those days. If you do not have a device at home, this is the time to order one from our central office, as Cedar Grove will not be sending devices home. Please complete the Chromebook Form to Distribute to Families to request a home use Chromebook. It takes some time to get the home use device sent to Cedar Grove to distribute to your children, so please consider that when you decide to request a home use device.

We're going to have two school-wide celebrations next week, as well. Autism Acceptance Spirit Week and Jansson's Park. Please bookmark the newsletter, which will be updated every Friday!
