St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 1, Term 4 (Friday 12 October 2018)
Dear Parents and members of our school community,
Father of all mercies
We ask that you would bless
the youngest and littlest of learners,
the most helpless and powerless of persons,
with Your infinite and loving mercy,
granting them the strength to learn, concentrate,
and act in love towards
their teachers and fellow students.
We also ask that You would watch over them,
at home and at school
and give them proper direction
so that they may learn
of Your wonderful virtues.
We ask this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen
We extend a very warm welcome to several new students and their families who have joined our school community this term. We have a very busy schedule of work planned for our students and we have already seen such great improvements in children’s achievements in all subject areas.
At this afternoon’s assembly, I will be awarding Performing Arts Excellence and Outstanding Performance Awards, 2018 Shaun Tan Awards for Young Artists, The Angelico Primary Art Awards plus the winners of today’s Spelling Bees for Years 4, 5 and 6. Additionally the various merit Award citations note excellence in Mathematics, public speaking, Science and most important of all, being a kind and considerate friend to others.
These awards reflect the myriad of opportunities afforded to our students with the support of their teachers and parents at our great school. We have changed the date of our School Annual General meeting to Wednesday 28 November.
I do hope that many more parents come to hear of some new initiatives occurring in 2019 plus to learn of the 2019 teaching, administrative and support staff.
I love reading something and thinking that a writer has really understood certain issues and explained them in a simple and engaging way. There are so many stories in the media of students becoming obsessed with online games and especially being afflicted with FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out which sees them engaged in long online chat sessions where the keyboard warrior syndrome takes effect and they write things that they would never say face to face. The analogy I loved in this article was that if your child had an obsession with matches and lighting fires, you would, as a responsible parent, take the matches away. The same logic should apply with your child’s obsession in being online. The link to this article follows here:
I can't control my child's use of technology. That statement and life choice needs to be revised. (by Dr Ragnar Pruje)
From next Thursday till Tuesday 6th November, I will be on Long Service Leave visiting my family in Canada. Mrs Angie Letizia will be short term principal in my absence.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OF STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY
We have been informed by Christina Holly (School of Education at Edith Cowan University) that there has been a change to the Carers Allowance scheme which is effective in two weeks. Christina has advised us that the change has not been advertised and many families are not aware of this. Christina is joining with Telethon Institute and other agencies to spread the word to parents within our school communities.
A letter has been posted on parents' MyGov account asking them to submit their joint income as this payment is now to be means tested. It is a very low means income, as it is not affected by severity of disability or number of children within a family.
If this paperwork is not submitted to Centrelink/ATO, the Carers payment will be discontinued regardless.
With thanks
Joanna Roper
(Disability Support Coordinator)
Uniform News
A reminder that students return back to school in summer uniform and that we allow a two week change over period.

The executive committee would like to thank each and every person and business for any contribution big or small, made to the P & F this year. The St Jerome’s P & F is quite an active group and without support the activities and tasks can be quiet overwhelming. The support of parents friends and businesses is crucial to its continued success. We look forward to seeing new faces on the executive committee next year.
The nomination forms for the executive and general committee will be coming out soon.
