Campus Happenings
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for pulling together over the last two weeks of the semester to complete our first round of Benchmarks! We will use the data gathered to guide instruction over the upcoming six weeks. My goal this semester to help build your toolbox with resources and tools that can be easily applied in the classroom. If there is a specific topic you are interested in, please let me know!

Proximity Instruction
Cain and Laird's book The Fundamental Five (2011) introduces the concept of "The Power Zone". The teacher spending time in the "power zone" means they are teaching or monitoring in a position in the middle of the action, placing themselves in close proximity to a student, small group, or within the entire class. The authors note that teachers who teach from the "power zone" note a significant increase in on-task behaviors and a decrease in disciple issues. This also places the teacher in a position to complete formative assessments as you go. For more information, check out the video link below.

Formative Assessments
3-2-1 Countdown Strategy
This is a true test of relevant and meaningful learning. When students learn something they find useful, they're likely to want to use that learning in some way. Have students end the day with this one. Give them cards to write on, or they can respond orally. They are required to respond to three separate statements:
- 3 things you didn't know before
- 2 things that surprised you about this topic
- 1 thing you still have a question about
You can also ask them different kinds of questions. These are suggestions, so feel free to make up your own.

10 INNOVATIVE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT EXAMPLES
Innovative formative assessment examples provide crucial information about what students understand and what they don’t. Teachers can use them to determine if further instruction is necessary.
