News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School
January 27, 2022
Principal's Message
On Tuesday we marked the 90th day of school, otherwise known as Halfway Day. Now on the other side of this, we also know that we are in what is typically the strongest stretch of learning in the school year. Our students and staff are making every day and every minute together count.
Learning at Haynes is not limited to what takes place for our students. Yesterday, Sudbury educators convened for a series of workshops targeted at enhancing our practice. I was able to attend sessions on culturally responsive teaching, the science of anxiety and signs of suicide. Other sessions available to our team included topics on working with data, integrating science and literature, supporting English learners and utilizing tech tools. It was a great day of learning for our teachers, and I know that this new learning will find its way into our work with our students and one another. It was a powerful model that our teachers are committed to continuous learning and growth.
Sincerely,
Jeff LaBroad
Principal

Haynes to welcome Regie Gibson
This spring Haynes will welcome poet/author/musician Regie Gibson as an artist-in-residence. Regie will be with us over the course of several weeks, and will conduct workshops in each classroom. He will focus on identifying with students what makes Haynes a special place. Using what he develops with students, Regie will write and compose an original Haynes School song. The song will be recorded for our exclusive use, and will be unveiled to our community during a live outdoor performance in June. Our thanks to the Massachusetts Cultural Council for awarding us a STARS grant which pays for this residency, and to HOP for supporting our application.
Literary Performer & educator, Regie Gibson, has lectured & performed in the U.S., Cuba & Europe. Representing the U.S. in Italy, Regie competed for & received both the Absolute Poetry Award in Monfalcone & The Europa in Versi Award in LaGuardia di Como. He & his work appear in "love jones”: a film based on events in his life. He is a National Poetry Slam Champion, has featured on HBO, several TED X events & various NPR programs including On Point & Radio Boston. He’s received the Walker Scholarship for Poetry from the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, a YMCA Writer’s Fellowship, a Mass Cultural Council Poetry Award, a Lexington Education Foundation Grant, a Brother Thomas Fellowship & two Live Arts Boston Grants to develop his first play, The Juke: A Blues Bacchae. He conducts writing and performance workshops throughout New England & teaches at Clark University.
Voice Amplification Systems now standard at Haynes
All Haynes classrooms are now outfitted with voice amplification systems as a standard feature in each classroom (including our specials classrooms). Our specific tool is the Lightspeed RedCat voice amplifier. The system pairs a high-quality speaker system with a lightweight wearable microphone, allowing the teacher to speak in a normal voice volume while having the voice projected clearly around the room. Students and staff alike are already reporting great benefits.
