Welcome Back BSE Staff!
2016-2017
BSE Staff,
This year we implement the 1:1 process at K-4 and there is a great deal of buzz among the staff on this topic. Almost all of you who I have had the pleasure of seeing at school mentioned some form of creative idea for the kick off. I LOVE the creative energy that you share, but hold the line on that topic as we will get some clear directions for a unified implementation from district. In fact they are working on some final items today. Remember that in HSE you, the teachers, have great freedom in the use and implementation of technology. You will design learning and application use etc. based on the needs of your students and their desires in the exploration they engage in. Keep your opening of school focused on the child, their discovery of information, and the environment that you will build with them. Again, I'll send that information when I receive it.
A special thanks to Stevens, Nornberg, Symons, Schermerhorn, Rich, Jenn Robinson, and Patrick for attending the very wonderful HSE Launching Inquiry training a few weeks back. Sadie and Erin were even selected for a new teacher's perspective of inquiry on WishTV a day ago. Great job! Many of you attended the iPad Palooza (see pic below) and have mentioned of your enjoyment around a variety of learning sessions. Thank you for taking your time in the summer to show the community that you too are life long learners and serious about being ready to AMPLIFY your instruction.
Many of us had the opportunity to watch Katie Muhtaris (Launching Inquiry) and Kristin Ziemke (iPad Palooza), the authors of AMPLIFY. Although I have not talked all of you just yet, the word from most so far is that they LOVED their presentation. I am certain that AMPLIFY is the one book we must all commit to reading and we must continue to review our notes, seek videos etc. with these authors/practitioners, as they send a message that is easy to understand and will inspire us to remember that teaching is what matters, not the technology. The tech is simply the tool that inspires endless opportunity to amplify our instruction.
A few notes that struck me while Katie talked...."We must use technology effectively, not just more. Value added is our quest, kids creating not just using!" Tech = Create * Specific Audience = Purpose. Are YOU the Chief Learner in the classroom? Do you believe YOU can?
Our need to commit to hearing the students' voice in our classrooms is greater than ever before. We have an opportunity to engage our students in a manner that is truly unique that could be tremendous for all learners. We must continue to take big risks as in the failure there is great learning for all of us to grow from. Let's make this a year to remember at BSE!
Please check out the many details of this update and send any questions to Fatima and I as you see any need to do so. We will make sure you are dialed and ready to be successful!

#KidsDeserveIt - Will BSE Push Boundaries and Challenge Conventional Thinking?
We begin with Chapters 1 &3 GO BIG, BE CREATIVE!.....INNOVATE! BE DIFFERENT!
People and organizations don't instigate great change or significantly impact others' lives by choosing the familiar path. In fact, with HSE21 we have made a commitment to our HSE community that we will be completely off and beyond the familiar path. Our kids deserve teachers who will step out into the unexplored and unexpected. Our schools, our communities and our kids deserve and expect it!
Tweet #1 Assignment:
What is the biggest fear holding you back from innovating?
How will you encourage your students to innovate and be different? Your Peers? Your leaders? How will you encourage student voice?
