Turning Points Final Exam

Jamestown May 14, 1607/ Roanoke 1585
Roanoke and Jamestown were the two first English colonies ever made, one colony failed in the making but the other made what we call today America. I am going to start out by talking about the first colony, Roanoke. Roanoke was the colony that failed in being made, the plan for making Roanoke was an English colony made by Sir Walter Raleigh but it was carried out by his cousin Richard Greenville and friend Ralph Lane. Before Roanoke was made Spain and France had started taking land in North and South America, which was part of the reason that England made a colony in America, there reason was to get natural resources from America, ship them to England and then sell them as pure profit. This did not work out though, Roanoke was not just simply made, the first time ti was founded it was attacked by a native Indian tribe, after that Roanoke was made again. At one time Roanoke began to run out of materials and so Sir Francis Drake left Roanoke to get supplies. After he got to England there was a battle called the Spanish Armada, Sir Francis Drake was not able to make it back in time and when he got back the colony was gone, all that was left was the word Croatoan carved in a tree. Then England made another colony in Jamestown, Virginia. The point of this colony was to make a permanent settlement in America. The settlement almost didn't work because nobody would make crops, all they wanted was gold. But luckily John Smith came and saved the town by using the policy that if you don't work then you don't eat. That saved Jamestown and also what saved Jamestown was when John Rolfe brought Spanish Tobacco to Jamestown and gave Jamestown a great way to make profit. The Spanish tobacco helped make England more wealthy and it would soon grow to make the thirteen colonies.

Roanoke
This is the location of Roanoke in north Carolina. If it wasn't for the English making Roanoke they might have never made any other colonies and we might not even be here.
Sir Walter Ralieigh
Sir Walter Raliegh is one of the key factors in making Roanoke. It was his idea to make a colony in America and if it wasn't for him Roanoke would have never been made.
John Smith
I think that John Smith is one one the most important factors in the survival in Jamestown. John Smith came up with the policy on that said " If you don't work then you don't eat". That made Jam town get serious and start working, and making food. If it wasn't for him then Jamestown wouldn't have survived.
9/11 Attack
9/11
On September eleventh, 2000 two American airplanes flew into the Twin Towers, another flew into the Pentagon and fourth crash landed in a field in Pennsylvania, this was the first major terrorist attack on American soil. This attack was made by the terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden. Osama Bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia and then grew to make the world known terrorists group called Al-Qaeda, who are held responsible for this attack. Al-Qaeda hijackers got into four American planes, hijacked them and crashed all of them into specific locations except for the fourth, the fourth plane was taken over by the citizens in the plane and crashed in a cornfield. The 9/11 attack America in many ways, we spent over 210 Billion dollars during President Bush's alone because of the 9/11 attacks. Things that were done in response to the 9/11 attacks were the hunting down of Osama Bin Laden, the Afghanistan and Iraq war, The Homeland Security Act, The Patriot Act, stricter immigration laws, law enforcement, etc. 9/11 brought America together as a stronger nation but has changed economically socially and physically as a whole.

Osama Bin Laden
If it wasn't for Osama Bin Laden 9/11 probably would not have ever happened. He created the terrorists group called Al-Qaeda which is held responsible for the attacks on 9/11.
George W. Bush
George W. Bush was the president at the time of 9/11. He is not important during the time of the 9/11 attack, he became important after the 9/11 attack. During his presidency over $210 Billion dollars were spent to stop another terrorists attack from happening, all of which happened under his command.
1968
How 1968 Changed American History
Many things happened during 1968, assassinations, civil rights movements, wars all sorts of things, but all of these were the result of one thing. That one thing is inequality, colored people wanted to be equal in America and they were willing to fight for it. One of the names that you might remember from civil rights is Martin Luther King Jr. He helped in the making of the SCLC ( Southern Christian Leadership Conference). Martin Luther believed in non-violence being the path to freedom. Martin Luther was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee, April 4 , 968. That sparked the 1968 race riots, which were violent riots for civil rights against the government in response to Martin Luther's death. Also that year Bobby Kennedy was assassinated while giving his California victory speech. Also we were in war at Vietnam during this time, this war changed America because it taught us we cannot trust the government.
MLK Assination
Mlk assassinated in Memphis Tennessee for being a civil right's activist. This sparked Race Riot's around the United States.
Civil Right's Movement
This is a picture of Civil Right's activists being sprayed with a water hose. There was a man named Bull Conner who hated colored people and would hurt them at all means, these people really fought for there rights.
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War era was very depressing for America at the time. It taught America that we could not trust our government anymore after they figured out the President Johnson was lying to them about the War in Vietnam.
Event Information
9-11 Attack
I think that 9/11 is the most important turning point not only in this class but also in the history of the world. I think it is the most important because it taught America to grow up, it also made us realize ho vulnerable we really are. Because of this made our country more protected and secure than ever before.
