Community-Wide Announcements & Reminders
Eclipse: April 8, 2024 - A Message From the SAU
Dear Families of SAU 39,
As a reminder, on April 8, 2024, there will be a near-total solar eclipse visible from our location starting around 2:15 p.m. and ending around 4:30 p.m. Due to the timing of the eclipse, we have moved the early release scheduled for April 17 to April 8 for students and have planned professional development for teachers. Clark-Wilkins and Mont Vernon Village School will have childcare available as usual during the early dismissal.
While this is a rare and exciting opportunity, it presents a risk of eye injury, especially for children who may not understand the dangers of looking directly at the sun. At no time will it be safe to look at the sun without the protection of eclipse viewing glasses. All students will be sent home with ISO and CE certified eclipse-viewing glasses on Monday, April 8th, so they can safely view this phenomenon (at Souhegan, these glasses were distributed in Advisory on Wednesday and Friday).
We encourage you to discuss this event with your child and reinforce the importance of following safety guidelines when viewing the eclipse. For more information on protecting your eyes during a solar eclipse please visit Dartmouth Health Protecting Your Eyes or NASA Eclipse Safety.
This natural phenomenon is a rare occurrence and provides a unique learning experience for our students. Our teachers will incorporate the solar eclipse into lessons to enhance students' understanding of this event along with the importance of eye safety. For more information and resources on the solar eclipse, please visit NH Education Department Eclipse Resources.
A solar eclipse is a remarkable natural phenomenon and with the proper precautions, we know this will be a memorable experience for our students.
Sincerely,
Michael Berry

School Highlights
Bowl-a-thon Fundraiser
In February, the Souhegan Sabers bowlers joined with the Amherst Bowling Club for the 2 nd Annual Bowl-a-thon fundraiser. The combined bowlers of the two teams, along with their coaches, chose Share Outreach, in Milford NH, as the locally-focused charitable organization to which they hoped to donate.
Through the support of family, friends, and the bowling community, these young people were able to raise over $850 for Share. Last week, representatives from the Sabers varsity team and the middle school Club, visited Share and delivered a check for $867.

HYPE Day 2024
On Thursday, March 21st, 2024 the students from Souhegan Ethics Forum lead this year’s HYPE conference at UNH Durham. This time-honored tradition was a successful event with the opening speeches given by Souhegan’s own Taylee Normandin, various students from other high schools, and Adar Choen who is a notable Alumni from ConVal High School who now has a PhD in conflict resolution and has a reputable background.
This year’s Essential Question was: How does self-perception affect how we interact with the world around us?
Over 800 students participated in eye-opening conversations about how self-perception affects every part of their lives. This year was a success as people were comfortably engaged in their discussions. Feedback given to the forum from HYPE participants was highly positive and many would like to return to HYPE next year. The Souhegan Ethics Forum would like to thank all those who participated and supported their conference this year.

Student Services
PSAT 10 and SAT Scores:
PSAT 10 and SAT scores will be available for most students on April 18th. Students should receive an email notification, if they provided an email address during exam setup, when they are available. Students have three ways they can access their scores:
Students that opted into the College Board’s BigFuture app. during exam setup and downloaded the app. will be able to access their scores directly through the app.
Students can log in to their College Board account and access their scores online at studentscores.collegeboard.org. Most 11th grade students (SAT) will already have an account. Most 10th grade students (PSAT 10) will need to create an account since this is their first College Board assessment. If students have created an account in the past but cannot recall their login information, it is important that they DO NOT CREATE a duplicate account as this will cause future issues with score reporting. We recommend students use a personal email address for creating their account, in case they need to access their College Board account after graduation.
If students are having a hard time accessing their scores, their school counselor can help them access their scores and help troubleshoot College Board account issues if needed.

Senior Project
Seniors need to have completed their applied piece by the Applied Piece panel meeting on Thursday, April 18. Once they have successfully completed this checkpoint, they may begin working on their final presentation, which will take place on May 23 and 24. Parents who have any scheduling conflicts or requests during either of these days should fill out this form and submit it by Friday, April 12. We cannot guarantee that requests made after this time can be honored. If students have not finished their project by April 18th, they will not present on May 23 and 24. Late presentations will be scheduled based on panel and parent availability anytime between May 28 and June 7th. Please reach out to Kathy Maddock and Ryan Lemieux with any questions.

Julie Colby
What is your role at Souhegan?
9th grade math teacher
How long have you been with Souhegan?
11 years
What do you love about your job?
I love watching students become more confident learners and humans. Getting to work with ninth graders really allows me to watch them grow over their four years in high school. So much happens in that time and I get to witness it and be a part of it!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to watch my kids do what they love. With an empty nest looming, I look forward to getting back into hiking, visiting national parks and baseball parks. In a good year, I like to grow vegetables in the yard.
If you were given one wish what would it be?
I would wish that all children feel safe and cared for, with full bellies. And a winning lottery ticket. And a house where it doesn't snow in April. Don't I get three wishes?
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
Do good math.
