no school for students-Thursday and Friday (March 18 & 19)
A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Family,
It's been a short week here at school, but lots of learning is going on! We are quickly closing out the third grading period and only have 1/4 of the school year left. Wow, that sure went quickly! We still have a lot to do. As the weather changes and it becomes nicer outdoors, so many of our students lose focus. It's important to keep this in mind as your child's attention starts to wander. We need to keep going strong, not getting distracted by the other demands on our child's time. We need our students to keep reading and have the stamina to finish strong. Your help with this is so important! Together we can do so much!!
Tomorrow we are getting our COVID vaccines, so there is no school. As Mr. Heflinger indicated, Friday is a calamity day with no school-this was previously on the calendar. We hope that all staff are feeling well and back on Monday! We appreciate your understanding as we get through this last hurdle!
Enjoy the sunshine this weekend!

Class Assignments 2021-2022
Discussions about class placements for the 2021-2022 school year will begin in April. If you have specific educational concerns for your child, please put this information in writing and send it to the office addressed to Mrs. Bookman. Please include learning environments that may work well for your child. Please do not request specific teachers as these will not be accepted or considered. We as a staff take great care in placing students in an appropriate learning environment that will best meet their needs. We try to create heterogeneous classes with a balance of genders and student needs. We use a system that is research-based and is proven to promote the most growth for all students. In order to have your concerns addressed, all letters must be received in the office no later than Friday, April 16, 2021. Any notification after this date will not be accepted.

Zoom Clarification for In-Person Learners
If your child has COVID symptoms or is exposed to someone at home with COVID symptoms, and cannot attend school, please notify the office immediately.
A student with COVID symptoms is not required to login to class to live stream if he or she is ill; however, you have the option of having your child live stream if you feel that your child is feeling well enough to be online. If they feel well enough and will be logging in, please let your child’s teacher know so that the teacher will let him/her into the Zoom session.
If your child is quarantining they are expected to be logging into all of the classroom Zoom sessions throughout the day. If your child is home on quarantine and cannot login for any reason, you should call your child off school like you would any other day. If you have any questions please let me know.
If your child is off of school for anything not “COVID” related, he/she will not be permitted to join a Zoom session.
A message for our remote learners
- The next material pick-up/drop-off date is March 29th from 9:30-1:30. Drop off the YELLOW envelope with any work your child may have to turn in. Even if you do not have something to return, please bring the envelope. We will give you the RED envelope with new work.
- Please keep the office informed if your child will be absent from the live streaming. This is important for attendance purposes. Also, it is important for your child to log in on time so the teacher can let your child into the Zoom session. If your student is late, he/she may not be able to get into the session.
- Future pick-up/drop-off dates are:
- April 19
- May 3
- May 17
- June 1
- June 10
To help at home learning, please consider headphones with a microphone so your learner can better focus and interact with the teacher-Thank you!

Children's Advantage at Suffield
Counselor's Corner
3/17/2021
Hello Field Families!
While students are ultimately responsible for the choices they make, there are things that you can do as a parent or guardian to support your student as they work on self-regulation. One of the first steps for self-regulation is to consider what your child is communicating through his/her anger. Anger can often be a manifestation of other feelings like disappointment, sadness, or frustration. By getting to the bottom of the anger, you will be able to better help your child work through it. Another important part of self-regulation is helping your child learn and work on coping strategies they can use help with the anger they are feeling. In school Most classes have worked with me on some coping skills, please ask your child which one they would like to use. The more you practice the coping skills with your student when they are not upset the easier it will be for them to use when they are. When you see your child using their coping skills, or at least attempting to, praise them! Let them know that their efforts have not gone unseen and that you are proud of the work they have done.
And the most important and perhaps the hardest part as a parent is to remember when your student is angry is to make sure you are in control of your own anger. If we respond to the child’s anger with more anger, it can add to their anger. If you notice that you start to get angry, it’s important to use your own coping strategies. Not only will this help you support your child, but it also gives them a chance to see you modeling the behavior that you want to see from them.
If you have any concerns please feel free to contact me! Also please check out my website to sign up for coffee with the counselor and or to contact me for your child's needs! School Counselor's Corner

Crayola Colorcycle Program
Crayola and schools across North America have banded together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Suffield Elementary will now take part in recycling markers that no longer work. It’s a super easy project to help our environment! You can send in any brand of markers, sharpies, dry erase, and highlighters. Once we collect the markers, they will be shipped to a facility that repurposes them so that they are kept out of the landfills.
