From the Director's Desk:
Dear Raven Parents and Students,
I know that our school year will soon be wrapping up. For some of you, it already has. I know that each of you have grown, learned new things, and have been persistent in your work as teachers and students during this crazy year of Covid.
This last year, we have greatly missed seeing each of you in person and hearing your children’s joyous laughter during activities. We are super excited to be returning to a more normal state of operations and getting to see each of you in the coming days and weeks as we close out the 20-21 school year and begin preparations for the 21-22 school year.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our Raven staff for going above and beyond this year. I want to extend the greatest thank you to each of you parents as you entrusted us to be your guide and assistant through this homeschooling year. I am forever grateful to our students who through it all exhibited strength, grace and grit.
Each of you is an inspiration that makes me confident that next year will even more exceptional!
Each of you deserve a pat on the back for your sacrifices and dedication, as it is very clear that as Alaskans we are strong and have the spirit to survive whatever is put in front of us!
Go forth and do great things with great fun!

Congratulations to our graduates!
Raven is proud of your accomplishments and excited to present such a large number of awards and scholarships to this year's graduating seniors for the 2021 school year. Wishing you all the best with your educational endeavors!
Summer Jobs?
Working a summer job isn’t something that every student considers. Some don’t have to. Some don’t want to. But we’re here to tell you that it can be advantageous to the rest of your educational career, and it can serve you quite well in your life after school. So get your applications out there while owners and managers are looking for seasonal help for the summer. Here are 4 reasons that should convince you:
- Getting ahead - You may just have a part-time job that doesn’t seem like it will matter in the grand scheme of things, but don’t be so quick to dismiss what you’re accomplishing in showing up for work every day and being a reliable employee. The sooner that you can get a taste of the working world, the further ahead of your peers you will be. You’ll have the opportunity to see how businesses work from the bottom up, and you may even see areas that you can improve upon, thus tapping into your leadership qualities and entrepreneurial spirit.
- Building confidence - In many ways, your summer job is one of the first places that you can build your sense of identity and distinguish yourself from many of your peers. It opens up a new world for you beyond the walls of a high school or the reach of your parents - and yes, that is very empowering.
- A chance to earn high school credit - Did you know you can earn high school credit for your Job? You sure can! Make sure you reach out to your advisory teacher about how you can earn credit.
- A chance to explore who you are - A summer job can be especially helpful in waking you up to what you DON’T want to do. So many of these positions start at the point of lowest experience and education, and whether through working conditions, job responsibilities, or poor pay, a young employee can get a sense of how valuable education truly is in rising to the next level. Or you may end up loving your summer job so much that it turns you toward the career that will ultimately define you. Either way, the opportunities to explore who you are and what you want out of life are great perks.
While there is a temptation to take it easy once school is out, getting a summer job can keep you active, sharp, and guide you toward a more successful future, both in school and in life. Best of luck submitting those applications!

Anchorage Office:
Book Clubs:
The Book Club members ended the year excited about reading! The middle school/high school group dove into the ramifications, physics, and theoretical concepts of time travel in the sci-fi mystery, Found. The older elementary group read the rousing high fantasy, The Book of Three, and discussed character development and what it means to be a hero. The youngest group made backpacks, learned about story elements, and made surprising discoveries in the delightful book, Toys Go Out. Book Club was one of the high points of the week! We cannot wait until next year!
Running Club:
Raven Running Club is an hour of fun and fresh air! Our team is training for the Mayor's Marathon/Healthy Futures Kids Mile on June 17th! We stretch, play games, run relays, tackle obstacle courses, learn good technique, and, of course, RUN! We are building our confidence and making new friends. See you at the races!
Poetry Club:
Poetry Club was a hit for the Anchorage office this year! Once a week for an hour, students in grades 2-6 joined Erika on Bluejeans and learned about various types of poetry. So Students wrote Biography Poems/Guess Who Poems, Haikus, Shape Poems, Colors Poems, Cinquains, Limericks, Couplets, 5 Senses Poems, and Diamantes. Students also learned about parts of speech, rhymes, syllabication, imagery, vowels, descriptive language and synonyms and antonyms. Poetry club will be offered again next year!
Mother's Day Activities:
For Mother's Day, we took the week and offered several different art classes for our students to be able to create their own handcrafted gifts for Mom. We offered a paper crafting class where students created their own 3D card, a pendant making class, and an acrylic paint class with a personal design specifically for our Raven families!
Upcoming Events:
Our end of year party will be on Tuesday, June 15th! We are still in the planning process but more information will be shared very shortly!
Keep an eye out for a newsletter announcing some fun Father's Day activities!

Delta Office:
April and May were busy months despite having a respite from Peaks testing! We had two crafts: A planting craft in April in anticipation of getting to be out in the gardens; hopefully soon! We made a sugar scrub and decorated the jars to give as Mother’s Day gifts in May. The weather has been very changeable, so our outdoor activities were a bit hit-or-miss with one Recess date being moved to the Alaska Museum Hall. Thank you Dorshorsts for sharing your space for our activity. Our local Community Library gave our students a tour and activity. Spring is definitely here with our Annual Walk to the Drive In and a bus ride to a local Farm. Everything is culminating with our High School Graduation!
Looking Ahead to June:
June 1st - Recess on the Raven Lawn
June 8th - Kindergarten Graduation
June 10th - Encumbered Funds receipts due
June 15th - Father’s Day Craft
June 15th - End of the Year Celebration at City Park
June 17th - Parent Advisory Committee Meeting
June 20th - HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
June 21st - May/June internet receipts due
June 22nd - Recess at City Park
June 29th - Recess on the Raven Lawn
Eagle River Office:
As Covid restrictions have slowly loosened, our office has thoroughly enjoyed opening back up and hosting more in-person activities. We couldn’t be more thrilled - we are actually seeing some of our families face-to-face for the first time!
In addition to our regular activities - outdoor club, recess club, and virtual book clubs, we also enjoyed some new ones in our last quarter of the school year. Deb Fancher held two different science workshops - Science of Snow and Electricity, we hosted 3 parking lot open houses where families could peruse curriculum and get advice and ask questions, the Littles Book Club came together for an end-of-year party complete with creative snacks and a craft, and Anchorage Police Department helped us out with some mock pull-overs for our teen drivers. We also celebrated our seniors at our 2021 graduation ceremony! Next month we will honor the 8th graders moving on to high school and lastly we'll end this chaotic year with a picnic at Mirror Lake. Food, games, and socializing are on the agenda!
Graduation:
On Thursday, May 20th, nine students from the Eagle River office joined our Anchorage Raven office in a graduation ceremony at Grace Christian Church in Anchorage. It was a great night of celebration! As is customary, students chose who would present them their hard-earned diplomas. Many chose their parents, some a sibling and still others chose both! Students and families traveled from all over Alaska to attend. One Eagle River student and his family came all the way from a small village just outside of Bethel.
Conlon Rishel performed an exposition drill demonstration, showcasing his 4 years in JROTC and Daylen Sandidge-Cullison gave an uplifting and encouraging speech for the graduates. As of this date, a total of 14 students from the Eagle River office have earned their high school diplomas. There are still a few more finishing up to graduate by the end of the school year and we would like to wish them all the best.
Congratulations to all of our graduates!
Littles Book Club:
The littles book club ended their year with a phenomenal party! The kids dressed up as characters from their favorite books and were so excited to finally see each other in person. They enjoyed treats which were based on the books they read throughout the year and created a banner which listed their book recommendations.
Parking Lot Open House:
Spring saw “Parking Lot Open House” return to the Eagle River office! Parents, teachers and staff exchanged ideas and tips for successful home education. Advisory teachers and long-time Raven parents hosted two Parking Lot Open Houses at the end of April and one at the beginning of May. They were well attended and parents enjoyed sharing what worked and what hadn’t worked in their homeschooling year. Curriculum opinions for next school year was the hottest topic all three days!
In conjunction with these open houses, Megan Rosendall hosted several “Introduction to High School” seminars for parents of 7th-10th graders and their students. Topics included required credits vs recommended credits, planning for your high school career, and the ins and outs of the Alaska Performance Scholarship. Megan also introduced parents and students to the Alaska Advantage dual credit program. With this program students can take college classes and have the earned credits apply for both high school and college.
Traffic Stop Training:
The lights! The sirens! Getting pulled over can be stressful and scary…….. especially if you are a teen and it’s the first time. We wanted our new drivers to know how to navigate a successful pull-over, so we invited APD officers Ruble and Macias to give us a hand.
The officers first gave some detailed information on what being pulled over would entail and what drivers should do and not do during the interaction. Then the teens took turns being “pulled over” by an officer. The teens did an awesome job. They asked great questions and passed the pull-overs with flying colors!
Staff Transitions:
Over the years, there have been many transitions in the Eagle River office. This year we are happy to share that the transitions will be minimal. Kayla Guerrero has served families as an advisory teacher this year but will be serving families as a special education and advisory teacher this next year. Many of you have worked with Megan Rosendall over the last few years. This year she served as an advisory teacher due to the great increase we had in enrollment. We are happy to share that she will be returning to her role as graduation coach. If you have any high school students or new to high school students, please be sure to connect with her as you start your year.
Student Spotlight: Mae L.
Mae is a 10th grader in Eagle River who has been homeschooled since kindergarten. As a homeschooler, she followed her passion for animals, learning so much about the animals that she had as pets. At one time there were 16 pets in the house, including hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, sugar gliders, a leopard gecko (lizards), a cat, a dog, a beta fish, and rabbits. In that time, she learned how the quality of the food and water affected the longevity of her animal and how to help them heal using homeopathy when the vet was unable to help.
Since moving to Alaska in 2019, Mae’s passion has moved to fire-fighting and emergency care. She has been with the Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company in Eagle River for the past year and a half. She devotes many hours to the fire department each month, sometimes leaving in the middle of the day to respond to a call for an “all members to a house fire” situation. She is always a valuable member and is welcome at major fires as she “knows the job”. Mae is entrusted with responsibilities not normally granted junior members, but with her dedication and perseverance, she has demonstrated abilities recognized by senior leadership. To date, this academic year alone, Mae has logged 277 hours with the fire department toward work study credits. She has a knack for this career path and does an amazing job with it. Last month, Mae was voted Junior Member of the Year by the senior staff at the station. Mae always has her fire bag ready to leave the house to respond to a call wherever she is needed.

Fairbanks Office:
Graduation:
This year our graduation ceremony increased in size, doubled from the previous year! The
weather and setting were breathtaking as 38 students received their diploma. Families, friends,
teachers, and the community watched via Facebook Live or attended in person as the future
leaders strolled down the Wedgewood Resort Gazebo sidewalk to receive the keys (diploma) to
their next chapter. Raven Fairbanks received an enormous amount of response from parents who expressed their sincere gratitude and appreciation for providing a beautiful walk-through
ceremony vs sitting for nearly 2-3 hours. The Fairbanks team is overly pleased we could provide a personal experience for the class of 2021. We are very proud of our seniors who worked hard and succeeded. This is a milestone in their lives, which each student can take pride in.
Fairbank’s Transitions:
Heidi Wright Retired May 21st: Heidi was an amazing teacher. She really knew the meaning
of mentorship and customer service. She took care of her high schoolers in distress with positive encouragement and support. Heidi is known for her gentleness, patience, and creativity! Regardless of the student’s needs, she always found time to give undivided attention. Even during the last hour on her last day, Heidi helped a grateful parent with a 504 plan. Heidi will truly be missed. Her team and parents thank her immensely for all the lives she touched in a positive way.
Bob Hawkins Returns to CTAE: Robert, known as Bob, has been a huge asset to the Raven
team! Bob joined the team during the influx of our sporadic enrollment and didn’t skip a beat.
Without hesitation, Mr. Hawkins jumped into the fast pace of enrollment and immediately began assisting families. Bob was overly dedicated; it was hard to realize he was toggling two jobs and supporting over 100 students. Regardless of the task, Bob remained committed to serving families and students. Mr. Hawkins’s positivity, professionalism, and can-do attitude speaks volumes about his work ethic. Although Bob will transition to CTAE full-time he will be missed beyond measure by his team members and families!
Tracy Kurzenberger, Family Liaison: Tracy, our talented Parent Liaison, will truly be missed.
Tracy is known for her creative and artistic mastermind. She is a true leader in our PAC
meetings and spends an enormous amount of time organizing out of the box - fun activities,
even in the midst of COVID restrictions. Although COVID presented many limitations, Tracy
skillfully created thoughtful and engaging virtual activities. Mrs. Kurzenberger did an
amazing job with our graduation to include designing the cards, creating the gifts, ordering
the signs, and decorating. Teachers, staff, families, and Raven Parent Liaisons will miss
Tracy’s positivity and beautiful smile! We wish her the best as she transitions to another
great opportunity.
Wishing Heidi, Bob, and Tracy much success from the Fairbank’s Team – we are going to miss
you!

Juneau Office:
Pottery, and projects, and parties--oh, my! Here in the Juneau Office, spring has kept us quite busy with both recurring weekly activities and special one-time events, including a move to more in person opportunities. Through April and May, we have continued to host weekly virtual activities including Show and Tell/Story Time on Mondays, Teen Chat on Tuesdays, 3rd-5th Book Talks on Wednesdays (ended in April), Quarantweenies on Thursdays, and Morning Mug for parents on Fridays (ended in April). We have encouraged students to get to know each other better through our monthly FlipGrid conversation topics, plus our Facebook Group is a very active forum for parents to connect with each other, share ideas, and get info/updates about fun activities and events to participate in practically every day of the week.
Since Covid has expanded our repertoire of virtual opportunities, we have continued to coordinate some fun online activities for students all across the state to be able to experience things they wouldn’t be able to in person here in Alaska. We got to “visit” the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and learn about the animals who live there. The Don Harrington Discovery Center in Texas did a wonderful presentation for students about the Science of Magic. Students learned about boating safety during a presentation organized by another Raven office, and we even “traveled” all the way to Missouri for an adventure about Lewis and Clark with Gateway Arch National Park. It’s amazing where all you can go while still enjoying the comforts of your own home.
We were also blessed to be able to start doing more in-person activities with families as Covid restrictions have lightened up. This year we had a record-breaking number of students participate in our IditaRead race with 51 students mushing their way through good books to the finish line. Race results can be viewed at this link. We had a wonderful Finisher’s Party outside the back of our office thanks to the good weather and fantastic families who joined us for the celebration. For Mother’s Day, we did a few things to honor our Raven moms. We had been doing weekly Morning Mug meet-ups for parents on Fridays, and for our last one of the year, we did a special one the Friday before Mother’s Day at the Twin Lakes Playground so kids could play together and the moms could have some time to chat. We also got to do another of Louise’s wonderful pottery classes, and this time she taught students how to make mugs for their moms. We were able to have some students at the office for the class portion and others joined virtually from home, then everyone came into the office to glaze their fired projects. The mugs all turned out beautifully and we got feedback from many moms about how much they were enjoying using their new mugs that the kids had poured their love into. Our last big Hurrah in May was our high school graduation ceremony during which fifteen of our seniors got to celebrate the culmination of their high school years with family and friends. It was a beautiful ceremony with a motivational speaker, numerous awards, and wonderful fellowship with families cheering on the hard work of our students. Visit our Facebook Page to watch a recording of the convocation ceremony.
Through all this fun, much learning was accomplished this quarter also as students finished up their academic years. We are always excited to highlight student achievements that parents share with us, so keep sending them our way. We have a fun assortment of in-person and virtual activities and events planned for over the summer months, so be sure to watch weekly newsletters, Facebook, and the online calendar so you don’t miss out on all the excitement including participating in our Summer Activities Passport program. Please enjoy this collection of photos from our Raven events as well as submissions from families and consider submitting your photos and achievements for our next Raven’s Call newsletter next school year!

Wasilla Office:
May, for the Wasilla Raven office, brings excitement and many extra hours as the current school year comes to a close. Our kindergarteners are finishing their first year of school and seniors are celebrating one chapter of schooling closing while anticipating the next- whether that is college, trade school, military, or the workforce.
Graduation was held on May 25th at the Valley Church of Christ, a large and beautiful venue. Thirty-two seniors participated in the ceremony, escorted in by someone who has been significant to them throughout their educational experience. It was thrilling to hear the pledge of allegiance recited in strong, clear voices and cheering after the Star Spangled Banner was sung. Graduates and audience alike were encouraged and exhorted by the senior student speakers, Arliana Wemple and Soren Larsen, as well as guest speaker, Dr. Talis Colberg. Of those walking, four students received the Alaska Performance Scholarship and two students received the UA Scholar Award. After the conferring of the graduates, caps flew in celebration! Congratulations class of 2021; you are on your way!
For the class of 2033 (the kindergarten class this year), the educational milestones are just beginning! Both the kindergarten class and senior class are celebrating accomplishments and anticipating the future. Well done.
A Note from Joy Shier, Assistant Principal:
The Joy of Retirement, well earned. That's me! I will be retiring effective June 30th from Raven Homeschool but will stay gainfully "Employed" assisting in the homeschooling of the next generation of young Shiers (my grandchildren).
Other transitions:
Cathe Rhodes came out of retirement to assist Raven Homeschool with our landslide enrollment this year as an advisory teacher. We are grateful for her help and friendship. She has been invaluable to families and staff alike. She will once again retire; but who knows, perhaps we can again entice her back. :)
Cynthia Kemp came to us from Georgia. Adapting well, she has graduated from a cheechako and is well on her way to becoming a sourdough. We will miss her and are grateful for the investment of three years with Raven Homeschool.
For many existing families, never fear - there is a seamless transition plan in place for you. For now, our on-going priority will be to provide you the best assistance we can as we move into the upcoming school year. We will let you know as soon as possible who your new advisory teacher will be so that you can become acquainted.
~ Joy Shier
We have one more thing to celebrate. Our very own Monique Ratzlaff, known to you as the admin assistant, received recognition from the school board and was chosen as the classified staff person of the year!
