Forecasting Info Sent Home
February is Forecasting Month
On February 12 during Community, students will begin the forecasting process for the 2020-21 school year. Students will receive updated transcripts, forecasting forms, and instructions on how to enter their course selections in the online forecasting portal. The online forecasting portal only works with a computer or Chromebook and will not work on a mobile device. After this session, students should review the online Academic Planning Guide found on the Westview website under Academics>>Academic Planning and work with their families, counselors, and teachers to choose their courses. Once their paper forecasting form is completed, students can complete the online forecasting process and choose their first and alternate courses. The due date for online forecasting is February 26, 2020.
February 20, 2020 is Curriculum Night at Westview. It is a great time to visit with teachers about course options. [Put details or links here about Curriculum Night]
On February 26, the paper forecasting forms are turned in and students complete their online forecasting in Community class. It will be important for students to bring their charged Chromebooks/computers to this class to complete the forecasting process.
Students are expected to enroll in and complete the classes selected during the forecasting season. Staffing and the Master Schedule are determined by the courses students select during forecasting. Therefore, after February 26, 2020, students will not be able to request changes to their course selections.

ACT Bubbling
Password Policy Change:
Beginning Monday, February 10, BSD password requirements will change to a minimum of 15 characters, with no complexity requirements. A 15 character passphrase is more secure due to the length and is also easier to remember. Think of a sentence meaningful to you (ex. “My favorite food is lasagna”) and use that sentence as your new password. This policy will take effect at the next staff password reset after February 10. For more information, see the IT Intranet page: https://bsd48j.sharepoint.com/department/IT/SitePages/Password%20Rules%20and%20Reminders.aspx

Student Survey February 3-June 5.
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school under the Annual Surveys tab and is posted at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Westview High School at 503-356-3020
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
Después de revisar la encuesta, si usted no quiere que su hijo participe, por favor notifique a Westview High School at 503-356-3020

Technology
Happy Sunday Staff! This week's newsletter brings you some more super cool information (http://bit.ly/stafftechnews20 ). Want to explore more in your classroom? I am always happy to come teach a model lesson, give you a one on one walk through, or help with a quick email. AND, feel free to stop by S216 on Thursdays between 2:30p-3p for Canvas and technology drop in help. Weekly topics to come.:
Where do you go for lesson plans?
If you have a minute, could you take this 1 Question survey?
GoogleForms Escape Rooms
The new ‘cool’ thing for my kids are escape rooms: you are given various puzzles and you need to figure your way out in under an hour. Though there are plenty of places you can pay for this experience, you can also offer escape rooms in your classroom using GoogleForms. GoogleForms allows you to ‘Lock Out’ the next question, so students would need to know the EXACT right answer to move forward. At WHS, Google Escape Rooms have been used to teach research skills, CTE, and Health topics. Want to learn how to use one or see an example, just let me know!
Digital Citizenship
Are you, or someone you know, in an unhealthy relationship with your data? That’s a question you might not have asked yourself not too long ago, but things are getting a little weird. With high profile data breaches, creepy ads following you around the internet, and years of old photos piling up on social media, now might be the time for a Data Detox to regain control of your digital life. This fun, new, innovative “8 Day Data Detox” online tutorial has awesome digital citizenship questions for students that can truly help them examine their online behavior.
Tech Thirty
It is a new semester, and most likely a new time to update your Canvas course for Semester 2. Need some help with the import? Stop by Thursday after school and we can get you all squared away.

Phishing Emails
Phishing Increase and Change to BSD Email Access
As we enter the holiday season, a recent report stated phishing activity has increased more than 400% from the first two weeks of November. For staff personally, attackers know online shopping increases and they design mock Amazon emails, text message giveaways, and other message designed to get our usernames, passwords, and even credit card information.
Cyber criminals also know that many school districts largely shut down over winter break so they are increasing their attacks against us as well. If you suspect any email of being a phish, please forward it to phishing@beaverton.k12.or.us so we can test. If it is a phish, we can automatically remove the message from all other mailboxes. In addition to protecting your account, forwarding it to IT could protect many others.
Many of our attacks come from machines located outside the United States. To make it more difficult for attackers to access any compromised account, we have implemented Geo-fencing on all Beaverton School District email accounts. This means that you will only be able to log into your email account from a location within the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii).
Many organizations have implemented Geo-fencing as one way to protect compromised accounts. It slows down the attackers ability to access the account, which gives us more time to identify the account and alert the staff member. If you will be traveling outside the United States and want to access email, simply put in an IT Help Desk ticket stating your destination and travel dates. We can create an exemption for you.
More information is available on our intranet page.
