Students Research to Create Tribute Poetry in Observance of Black History Month
Seventh graders in Florence One Schools created informed poetry as a part of their observance of Black History month at the middle school level. The theme for Black History Month 2019 follows "Black Migrations" honoring African Americans in motion -- as they moved from the farm to the cities, and from poverty to the national stage in business, politics, literature and the arts. Students researched African-Americans’ migration in key areas of American life through the span of history and three students received recognition as overall winners at their respective schools.
The poetry contest integrating research and content standards of both the 7th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum was one of several components of the celebration of Florence 1 Schools Black History month observance. To read the students' works, visit the Florence 1 Schools Facebook pages or visit the Florence 1 Schools website, www.f1s.org.
