Parent Teacher Conferences
Fall parent/teacher conferences are happening now! These brief meetings will be a great time for teachers to:
- share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations up to this point, testing data, assessments, and assignments
- discuss strategies to support students' learning
- discuss any issues that may be interfering with students' learning and growth
- answer any questions you may have
Parents should have received communication about available times to sign up for conferences from teachers. Please make sure you don't miss this opportunity to hear about all of the amazing things happening with your Frog!
National Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place September 15th - October 15th yearly as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributors, diverse cultures, and rich histories of the Hispanic community. The day of September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and 18th.
Approximately 23% of students, 5% of teachers, and 21% of residents in the Wylie community are of Hispanic heritage, and Wylie ISD celebrates these teachers, students, and their families during this observance.
Every week we will showcase Hispanics that work at Akin.
This week we will showcase Angelica Campbell!
I am a first generation Mexican American from both sides of the family. My mom was born in Durango, Mexico and my dad was born in Juarez, Mexico. Both immigrated to the United States in the early 70’s. They met in Los Angeles, California. I have 3 siblings, 2 girls and 1 boy who were all born here in the states. We moved to Texas when I was 6 years old. We are all first generation high school and college graduates.
Family has always been an integral part of our lives. I looked forward to it as a child to spend time with my grandparents and cousins. It was such a special time for us because we would come from all over the states to my grandmother’s house in Juarez. We got to catch up on time lost and spend time with those we loved. It was never enough time, but we took what we could get!
We celebrate every chance we get! I want my children to see how important spending time with family is. We are so fortunate to live close to our immediate families. We celebrate all of our birthdays and we have cake at least once a month! I love that my children see their cousins on a regular basis.
Carne con chile colorado is a dish my mom makes and it’s my favorite! It’s a bit spicy, but served with rice and potatoes is the best thing! Anytime she makes it, she sends some over because I do not make it. It’s too spicy for my children.
I am proud that my first language to speak was Spanish. I’m fluent in both English and Spanish. I tell my children how important and beneficial it is to speak more than one language. We practice at home and when they go see their Grandparents! I hope that one day both my children will be bilingual as well. :)
I’ll share my mom’s carne con chile colorado dish
This dish is versatile in that you can use beef or pork. I personally prefer pork. Both kinds will work.
Boil 10-15 Red Pepper ( New Mexico Red Chilli Pods)
Boil until soft
Remove from heat and put in a blender. Do not put all the water you boiled them in, only about a cup.
Add a clove of garlic and a laurel leaf for taste
Add a teaspoon of salt
Blend in the blender
Once it’s blended, you will have to strain the mixture to make sure all the seeds are removed. Add the water you boiled with to the strainer to make it easier to strain.
In the meantime…..
Brown the meat. Add diced potatoes
Once the meat and potatoes are cooked, Add the red Chili sauce.
Heat to simmer.
Serve with Mexican Rice and Enjoy!
Frog Fest
As a precautionary measure, and to accommodate all of our frogs, we are making some adjustments to our Frog Fest schedule. We will have our next Frog Fest on Friday, October 8th with our 3rd and 4th grade frogs. If your child is being recognized, the teacher will let you know in advance.
Parents are welcome to attend and sit in our visitor seating area. Parent seating will be marked.
Fall Break
Fall Break will be the week of October 11-15. Enjoy your time off!
4th Grade Track Meet
Parents are welcome to attend. Be on the lookout for more information to come!

WatchDOG Program
What is WatchDOG? WatchDOGS are positive male role models, such as a dad, grandpa, or uncle, who comes to school for the day. He follows a pre-determined schedule which will include spending time with your own child/grandchild, etc...but also serving in other classrooms, rotations, cafeteria, etc... The purpose of this program is to get more positive male role models in our elementary schools. In order to be a WatchDOG you must sign up and also complete and pass a background check. Once those steps are done, you will be ready to serve at Akin!
Below you will find important emails and the link that will take you to the background check form. This is good for one school year so if you filled it out last year, you will need to do this again for the 2021-2022 school year. If you have any questions or would like to know remaining available dates for this school year, feel free to contact Mrs. Brown, our WatchDOG Coordinator, at akinwatchdogs@gmail.com or Mrs. Leeper at Tierney.leeper@wylieisd.net.

Health and Safety Information
The district will continue to address questions and concerns regarding Wylie's health and safety protocols that will be observed this school year.
Updates to Quarantine Recommendations & Visitor Policy
Household Close Contacts/Positive Case in the Home
Beginning Monday, Sept. 13, Wylie ISD will require a quarantine period for students who have a positive case in the home. A student may be excluded from this mandatory quarantine period if they meet one of the following criteria:
Fully vaccinated (must be two weeks post-last dose of a vaccine series), OR
A lab-confirmed positive COVID test within the past 90 days.
Families should notify the district of a lab-confirmed positive COVID case in the home via our COVID-19 reporting form. The campus nurse will help determine a student’s return date. Quarantined students are eligible for the district’s remote conferencing program.
Non-Family Campus Visitors
Mentors and other non-family visitors can be a vital part of building relationships with our kiddos. With the recent surge from the Delta variant, we are postponing all non-family visitors to campuses. This is only temporary and will be reinstated as soon as possible.
